EFCC denies politicking with Cheney’s charges

The head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Farida Waziri, said yesterday that the federal government’s decision to charge former United States vice president, Richard “Dick” Cheney, for complicity in the $180 million Haliburton bribe scandal was not politically motivated. Speaking at the International Anti-Corruption Day 2010 forum in Abuja on Thursday, Mrs. Waziri said that millions of naira have been siphoned to overseas accounts by corrupt Nigerians with the aid of foreign collaborators.

“Some foreigners come into the country with the mindset that the country is very corrupt and everything goes,” she said.

However, she said that the commission was on the verge of recovering over $500 million from several multi-national companies that had violated the country’s laws.

Multiple agencies

Mrs. Waziri admitted that corruption was endemic in the country but was quick to say that anti-graft bodies in the country like the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Code of Conduct Bureau were ready to tackle the problem. She said the commission’s efforts had attracted support from anti-graft agencies in France, Britain, the US, Germany and the European Union.

The minister of justice and attorney general of the federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, also spoke at the event. He disagreed that the number of anti-graft agencies were helping with the fight against corruption.

“The multiplicity of anti-graft agencies with same functions and un-coordinated mechanism is one of the problems facing the agencies in Nigeria,” he said.

He promised that joint investigations and sharing of information amongst these agencies would be encouraged in a bid to move the agencies forward.

Seriously, Waziri is just a politician ready play ball. She gives women administrators a bad name with the way she has been running the EFCC aground. She knows how impossible it is going to be for the US government to hand over her former VP to Nigeria for prosecution, irrespective of how generally hated the man is in the US. The whole antics here is to bring up the arguement that if the US Govt can protect its topmost officials from prosecution then why should the Nigerian govt not do thesame to its top most diplomats and corrupt politicians like Atiku. This woman has reduced the anti-graft agency to just politics and nothing more. If they are serious to get justice then let them start with the Nigerian officials and politicians that were indicted by Okiro's Haliburton report and stop chasing shadows. No matter how bad or heartless Dick Cheney is, he aint a small fry that any tom, dick and privates can just 4ck with for some cheap political points.
