source - next news. Governor Fashola promised to pay 25 percent Tertiary institutions workers reject Fashola ’s offer Adeola Adeyemo December 8, 2010 11:08PM print email S At a meeting of the Joint Action Committee of tertiary institutions’ workers’ unions, on Wednesday, the staff rejected the offer of 25 per cent salary increase to them by the state government. The resolution followed a meeting on Tuesday between the state government and representatives of the tertiary institutions. The meeting was chaired by the state Governor, Babatunde Fashola. The state- owned tertiary institutions have been on strike for 13 weeks following the refusal of the state government to implement the signed agreement between the staff unions of the institutions and the federal government. However, the proposal by the state government regarding the agreement was still not favourable to the striking unions. According to Funmi Sessi, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Lagos State University Chapter, the governor ’s offer of 25 per cent was very far from what the unions were expecting. Insufficient offer “Governor Fashola was pleading with us to call off the strike,” she said. “He also informed us that he cannot pay what the federal government has offered us but he is going to pay 25 per cent of it to all workers in Lagos State. ” She said after the meeting with the government that the unions were most likely not going to accept the offer, but added that a final decision would be made after a meeting of all the unions. “We would go back to our congress and discuss the matter, ” she said. “I strongly believe that the unions in Lagos State would not agree. I don ’t feel Lagos State workers are going to sit down. ” Adesanya Adeyemi, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education Chapter, corroborated Mrs Sessi ’s views. “The governor presented a proposal which we are going to present to our members at the next meeting, ” he said. “The Joint Action Committee is meeting tomorrow (yesterday) in LASU and we would have a conclusion by then. ” He, however, said that the unions made their displeasure known to the governor at the meeting when the proposal was made. “At the meeting, we reacted to Fashola’s offer of 25 per cent saying that it was not acceptable and they should do what is expected of them as a government, ” he said. Pressure from students Students of the state university are not resting on their oars over the matter as they carried out a peaceful protest on the university campus Monday, and the following day blocked the Lagos–Badagry Expressway. The protest, though peaceful, disturbed some commercial activities within the area while it lasted. Bello Ibrahim, Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Nigerian Students, Lagos State Chapter recounted the students’ involvement in the protest. “It involved all students including leaders of LASU Student Union Government, ” he said. “All student bodies are under the umbrella of NANS. We barricaded both sides of the road for one hour. Our reason is to press home our demands of workers welfare, adequate funding of education in Lagos State, conducive academic environment and immediate resumption. Our demands are not just for LASU alone but other institutions in Lagos State that are on strike like AOCOED and MOCPED. ” |
