Why Are The Indians Taking All Our Jobs Away From Us In Our Own Country? by BigB11(m): 4:13pm On May 31, 2007 |
First, I'm not against the Indians, but if our mission is to move our country forward, our people need jobs to be able to fully participate or contribute toward rebuilding our nation. So, if you're an Indian, please don't take it personal; my people, Nigerians need jobs to be able to function positively in our society and I think they deserve to be the first choice when it comes to job opportunities in Nigeria. It makes absolutely no sense to ask a jobless college (university) graduate to be involved in rebuilding our country when this individual can not even provide for himself or herself. You just don't send an army with an empty stomach to war; it just doesn't work this way. I believe moving our country forward is also giving our people (Nigerians) first class job opportunities, this way these people can provide for themselves and for their families. We must discover why employers continue to import employees from another country (especially the Indians) when we have tons of jobless educated professionals at home who can hardly eat one meal a day. If we are truly committed to moving our nation forward, then we must quickly discover why employees are being shipped from another countries and also find an effective strategy to resolve this unbearable issue as soon as possible. Therefore please, sumbit your reasons and also feel free to present your solutions. Our brothers and sisters are home hungry and begging for food. We must work together as one vigorously and find a better way to ascend back to the top; FYI: Messages from this site are getting to the right people in Nigeria, so do not hesitate to bring it on if you have bright ideas. May God bless Nigeria. 1 Like 1 Share |

Nobody owes you a job. If you allow an Indian to work harder than you and get a job before you, that's nobody's problem but yours. Indians are not more privileged than we are, yet they're making progress through hard work. Instead of being jealous, let us strive to learn from these hardworking people. Let us strive to work harder. |

Are you saying Nigerians do not work hard enough? |
Re: Why Are The Indians Taking All Our Jobs Away From Us In Our Own Country? by Mamajama(m): 4:44pm On May 31, 2007 |
Thank you Seun, it’s all about cheap labor and making profit. That is the practice all over the world. We have out sourcing of jobs in the states to India. It’s cheaper to hire well experienced candidate from India to do a job. But competence individuals who displayed their credentials and potential will distinguish themselves among other candidates. You have to be able to sell your skills and yourself to get the job you want. Don't you have to have a work permit to work as a foreigner in Nigeria? |

First, I do not buy that "not working hard" stuff, it is totally far from the fact. Second, it's not about being jealous; it's about finding a better way to upgrade our skill level and provide job opportunities for the citizens of Nigeria, which will eventually be beneficial to the progressiveness of the nation. Third, if competency level is the issue, then we must find a way to gear up and improve our skill level. Finally, a nation will never never move forward without providing job opportunities for the citizens. It is that simple. This is a very important area I think this new administration should improve. Our people need jobs and the future of our nation can not depend on Indians; it must depend on us and our children. In 20 years time, we do not want Nigeria to face this Mexican issue United States is currently facing; Instead, we should put policies in place to protect the citizens, motivate our people to upgrade their skill levels, and work together as one. You need to travel around the world and double check the competency level of Nigerians in different areas and the level of our work ethics. I'm confident that you will be surprised. Please, don't degrade or label Nigerians as being lazy; we are talking about Nigerians in general, not just one or two. 1 Like |

Big B1: BINGO, the Nigerians abroad that you are talking about are competence because they've accepted the challenge of going to school, working hard and they have access to better education facilities and equipment. How can you compare a med student that went to school in AJEGUNLE to a med student from LOYOLA IN CHI TOWN? Not until the government provide the right equipment to facilitate better education for our youth in Nigeria. it will be a merry go round for ever. The education system in Nigeria need to me revise. then we can have COMPETENT people to move the nation forward. |
Re: Why Are The Indians Taking All Our Jobs Away From Us In Our Own Country? by BigB11(m): 6:51pm On May 31, 2007 |
Got your point. In order for Nigerians in Nigeria to compete more effective for jobs, our standard of education in Nigeria must improve. Good point! So, what about enticing Nigerians from abroad with job opportunities at home, instead of enticing the Indians? This used to be the case back in the days. We must bring back those beautiful days before we trade or sell the pride of our country to foreigners. 1 Like |

if the government is ready to provide security, better housing and amenities road, and health system we will all be happy to come back and work for a living. you don't expect us to come home and be subjected to constant bad road travail, thieves and traffic congestion. it all relate back to the government, 1st we must identify the problems facing migration of Nigerians to other nation. Then we can effectively solve this problems. This is a collective effort and does not just reside in the government. we must challenge each and everyone of us to take the initiative to build a better Nigeria. ROME was not build in a day. we expect too much from the government. 1 Like |

Let's face it, that could eventually become a problem in the future even here in the states most indians would start fixing up their relatives up with job soon after they get to a decision making position. It is very common here especially in IT industry. So Naija need to watch out for that. They need to make adequate provision for our graduates too. What is the use of going through all that hardship of acquiring degrees when in fact outsiders would be given priorities over you at the end of it?. On the other hand we need to address why we are somewhere, most of our people only go out for just one thing and that's themselves. Immediately you realize that your primary reason is to serve your country/your fellow human beings and that your job is just a vehicle for that purpose you will see how our country will start to move forward. Soon as we start teaching patriotism, selflessness, service, and quality in our school systems at all level you will see tremendous changes taking place 1 Like |

Why not ask this question . Why are foreigners taking British jobs when the people are living on welfare and also since these days, most English graduates are filling shelves in asda and tesco on a minimum wage ?? These are the type of questions that breed hate and genocide. |

big1 , i agree with you, however its not just indians but all the 'expats' In Nigeria expats are first considered for good jobs before nigerians, this shouldnt be so. In any developed country they protect the jobs for their own people first before a foreigner. for most working visas in the UK and USA, the company needs to show proof that no one else from the country was skilled enough to do the job, only when that is the case, then the job will go to a foreigner, But in Nigeria it is the otherway round! I once posted a thread about a job that was targetted at an ''expat', meanwhile there are many graduates in this country that can do the job. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-51404.0.html I have nothing against foreigners in the country, but i think every country has to look out for itself first, because in the sphere of nations, countries look after themselves first. Protect jobs for our people first, if no one can do it, then they can come and have the job. But i think the case in nigeria is to do with our mindset, we look down on ourselves, .the oyinbo is beter than us. second slavery that is! @mamajama , where is the profit and cheap labour??, the companies in nigeria do not pay less to employ indians than to employ nigerians, no indian will come to nigeria to earn N20,000 a month, they live life here like kings. 1 Like 1 Share |

This is why it is very important for all of us to identify all the reasons why employers in Nigeria prefer to hire foreigners instead of Nigerians. We should also display solutions. This is a major problem in Nigeria that needs our attention for the sake of tomorrow. I'm sick and tired of jobless college (university) graduate professionals walking around the country with empty stomach. This must stop. It is our country, our people deserve to be considered the "first choice" It is very simple, Nigeria will never never move forward if the citizens have absolutely no hope to get decent jobs, just because of expats. It should be Nigerians first in Nigeria, no disrespect. 1 Like 1 Share |

Why should there be welfare? when all the traditional rulers are basically on welfare in the name of unnecessary tradition. We should start being innovative and competent so that we can somehow partner with other African nations by being the ones to help them instead of the europeans, americans, asians, indians, and latinos. |

Big B1: rightly said! just like a lot of the problems in this country has to do more with our mindsets and values. if things continue like this in Nigeria, i envision 20 years from now the social structure will look like this: the middle class will consists of 'Chinese manufacturers'', European/ South African ceo's, Indian managers, and the working class: Nigerian beggars and politicians 1 Like 1 Share |
Re: Why Are The Indians Taking All Our Jobs Away From Us In Our Own Country? by naijaway(m): 10:27pm On Jun 01, 2007 |
@mamajama, traditional rulers are not on welfare i was only trying to minimize their effects, they are on salary, government allocated salary; The truth is they need to be abolished. I know some and have an uncle who is eventhough he doesn't like the title. Welfare on the masses when u'r not paralyzed, sick, or watever is a catastophy for the economy. It will encourage a lot of people not to work and will cut back on things like building roads, electricity, pension pay, research, etc because a lot of people will feel obliged to get that. I mean there's massive unemployment in the nation but that doesn't call for welfare for a nation like naija that doesn't have a national database for tracking the truth about many individuals. We just need to outsmart the foreigners in Africa and form a partnership with others especially in the region especially congo because they have the largest natural resources. Am not greedy or watever you think, is better than others who exploit us and it will take congo from the fake friendship being showed by cameroun. |

Because they are ahead of the curve than we are in Nigeria. They have been practicing a market oriented economy for a long time and India has invested a lot in human capital (do a google search for Indian Institute of Technology and you'll see what I am talking about) and it is now bearing fruit. We have a large pool of graduates available for work in Nigeria, but a lot of them do not posses the skills (and experience) needed on some jobs. As such, we have to rely on these expats. It is very unfortunate, but that's just the honest truth. With time, we will catch on. |
Re: Why Are The Indians Taking All Our Jobs Away From Us In Our Own Country? by Nobody: 8:06am On Jun 02, 2007 |
How will you catch on when you're not given a chance to work at all?. . .Most Nigerians do not get the jobs, not because they're not qualified but because they have a Nigerian degree, colo mentality, that's all it is. 1 Like 1 Share |

A lot of them, not all, are unqualified. There was a guy, right here on nairaland, that was in his 4th year of computer science and said they were still running pascal programming of the 1970's ! He said they were using some outdated operating system (i think it was DOS or Windows 3.1). He said he took a programming class once where everything was written on paper, he didn't run any program on a computer. Everything was theoretical. Would you consider this type of guy qualified as a computer science graduate in today's labor market ? We have the smarts, but our schools are not equipped so they can provide the necessary skills needed at the job market. Bear in mind that it's not just the expats that are given preference, but Nigerians that graduated in foreign universities such as in the United States, Canada and the UK are given preference over our indigenous graduates.
I think a lot our graduates qualify for lots of entry level positions, but not at the managerial level. A chunk of the folks coming from India and co. are bringing their experience along with them. They are not coming for entry level positions. Sooner or later, a Nigerian working at an Internet Service Provider (ISP) as an entry level personnel, would learn the ropes and become a manager (if they are not discriminating !) . Before you know it, the need for expats to fill these roles will decline. But it'll take some time. |

In all the response to this thread , i am yet to see anyone say something about how foreigners are being employed in India . I wish that some of you would come over here for a month and see what is called 110% policy of " Indian jobs for Indians " Have anyone of you ever wondered why all of our Nigerian professionals outside the country and especially in asia ,hardly anyone of them works in India . or is there anyone on this forum that can tell me his relation or friend or anyone he knows for that matter that works in India ? am sure the answer is no . have you ever asked why this is the case , have you ever asked why we have Nigerian doctors and other professionals in other asian countries like Malaysia, SaudiArabia, japan , and so many others but none in india ? does this mean that our professionals were good for those countries but not good for Indians ? try to check the answer to this questions and you will begin to understand the real Indian mentality . i know some Nigerians that came here to work and how sorry they felt for themselves b4 they left . They never tell u to your face that you would not be employed here , but they will make they ask you for some impossible requirements to frustrate you until you will get it clear in your brain that you are not needed . Go and ask why guiness company is not in india, and you would see more clearly ; they gave guiness some conditions one of which was that a certain percentage of Indians must be in the company workforce no matter what . so for some of you who say this is cos Nigerians are not hard working , you don't know what you are saying , Indian did not start having their professionals over night , this policy has been there even when they did not have much qualified professionals . why must our own be different ? why must Nigerians acquire the best degrees in the world b4 they are able to secure jobs in their country . i have personally seen Indians here who know no shit about their job and yet they are still being kept there . i know our educational system is in very bad shape, but go and check some statistics from some reputable sources like the bbc and it would amaze you that Nigeria still have some of the most educated people in africa .is it not from the same educational system that nigeria produce those kids that won several educational contests across africa ? indians live in and own some of the best houses in nigeria , have u a brother here in india who owns a house bought with his money and on his name ? or do u think we dont have genuine nigerian business here that can afford it ? the reason why they wont let you have your own house here is this , say u built the house with 10,000 dollars , and after few years you sell it for 15,000 dollars , you would then make profit of 5,000 dollars , now when u want to leave the country , cos you have all the document to show that u built that house and later sold it , they wont have to seize the money from you at the airport cos they would have not prove to say its illegal money . but with their wicked mind , they have already calculated that by coming to their country with 10,000 and leaving with 15000, you have made profit on them , so they feel they are the one that lost out , this is what they dont want, despite the fact that you pay property tax on that money , they prefer that you come there with that money and spend it here either by buying made in india goods or spending it as a tourist, then go back when your money finish , this way they feel they have gained from you and not the other way round . one more example, its normal in most country that when coming into the country you should declare the money with you , but when u declare money here and while leaving you didnt spend it and present the declaration papers for them to let you go back with your money , then you would see wickedness and greedy at play . they would ask you why you didnt spend the money in their country (does that concern them ?) , then they would start checking same declaration paper they gave you when u were coming in as if it has suddenly turned to fake and with any slight mistake which must be on their part as the only thing you would add there is your signature , they would delay you to make sure you didn't leave that day ,all on the pretext that they are doing investigation to make sure that the document is genuine .The main problem is that they are not happy you didn't spend the money b4 you go . in summary , we must use the same policy they have used for us and other foreigners in their country, if they make their policy to protect jobs for their locals , why must we not do same , if they have had such policy even when they did not have good qualified professionals , why must we not do same too . 1 Like |

@egoldman Thanks for sharing your indian experience with us. I would think a country with a population of over 1 billion people would have tight labor laws in place to protect its citizens. I guess the bottom line is that the Nigerian government must make sure that companies operating in Nigeria have looked thoroughly for skilled employees within Nigerian shores before they attempt to bring people from outside the country. The federal ministry of labor, for instance, could have a job bank/database of skilled Nigerian workers such that, a company cannot bring in a worker from overseas when a worker with similar skills/knowledge exists in the job bank. 1 Like 1 Share |
