This doesn't make sense, so those living abroad should go to Abuja first and then submit application when they get back to their foreign home? Perhaps they go to the foreign embassy first and then make the trip down to Abuja?

Almost all Countries have the Nigerian Embassy, so you mustnt come to Naija to renew your passport.
In US, we have the Nigerian Embassy in some states like Atlanta, DC, so when there's need , one can travel to the aforementioned states for their passports.

Don't deceive people in diaspora change of data on your passport e.g names, DOB you must go to HQ at Abuja it cannot be done at the embassy/consulate they don't have the access to edit passport data

It's easy to claim apply online apply online... My ppl if U reach there u will see d main application process jus like dis whole process didnt mention dat there are no booklets and U'll wait till booklets are available before u can b captured and pick up ur passport

Pls I've had this passport issue for more than decade now.
I used a wrong first name and last eveb DOB to register. Ever since then I haven't been able to change it or get a new passport.

It's like this OP doesn't live in Nigeria or has never obtained an international passport before. If you want to get a passport, you walk into the office and pay the unofficially official amount and wait. If you're fortunate you'd get it the same day. If you fool yourself with online payment, you'll be waiting for 3months with nothing. The Immigration officials themselves sabotage the system, so suffer if you wish.

I want to answer you sincerely, i recently got a new passport, i obtained my passport at Immigration office at Ikeja, Lagos, now these are my observations...It took me just one week to get my passport while it can take some people one month or even number of months to get their passport, it depends on the process you choose to follow, i am very sorry to say this, Our immigration officers are very corrupt, they can decide to delay or abandon your own simply because you do not want to come through them or their agents and it may end up taking many months before you can obtain your passport, what i did was to ask one of them at the entrance to help me with the process to enable me get mine quickly, instead of the normal amount, they will inflate the price for you, if you are the type that is ready to pay, then they will quickly process the whole thing for you, skip others that are running their own through the normal process and attend to you first, people that have been there for number of weeks waiting to capture will be abandoned , you that just come will still capture before them and get your passport before them. One thing i noticed about Nigeria is just for someone to be rich and always have money to sort out your self to avoid stress and humiliation. Nothing is done freely and fairly in Nigeria, may God help us.

IF YOU NEED YOUR INTL PASSPORT ASAP, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW SOMEONE IN THE IMMIGRATION OFFICE.
IF NOT, IF NOT OYO IS YOUR CASE, YOU WILL WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE FRUSTRATED, YOU WILL SEE PEOPLE YOU CAME DAYS BEFORE THEM COLLECT THEIRS AND GO.

I paid 35k for my passport and was collected within few days.

If not mentioned already, you will soon need the national ID card to obtain Nigerian passport.

My advice if you really want a Nigerian Passport, dont go to Lagos, Abuja immigration office, better go to like of Osun, Ogun, and less patronised states
