If i can remember clearly, the first okada ban was in Abuja by the then minister, Nasir El Rufai and that should be in year 2006.

Motorcycle taxis did not exist in Lagos before 1994. Lagosians heard about their existence in other states (mainly the northern states) and often laughed at those states because they believed that those states were backward.

Commercial motorcycles suddenly bust onto the scene in the mid-1990s. The authorities knew, even back then, that they were a great hazard. Governor Buba Marwa developed a plan to remove the motorcycles (nicknamed Okada after Okada Air which was believed to be able to go anywhere, even in great danger). Colonel Marwa imported auto rickshaws from India and planned to migrate the okada riders from riding motorcycles to riding rickshaws. He believed that the rickshaws were safer because they had 3 wheels (and therefore more stability) and that the riders would not be able to ride recklessly in the rickshaws. The auto rickshaws were eventually nicknamed after Governor Marwa (Keke Marwa).

The Obasanjo Administration used the auto rickshaws as a tool for poverty alleviation. They imported a lot of the rickshaws, painted them green and white and gave them to poor people on hire purchase basis. The rickshaws were known as Keke Napep, after the National Poverty Alleviation Programme (NAPEP) of the Obasanjo Administration.

There have been several restrictions and attempts to ban both Okadas and Keke Marwa in many states in Nigeria because the governments believe that they are unsafe (there have been many terrible accidents involving motorcycle taxis), the riders are unruly and because they also believe that they are being used by criminals to rob innocent citizens. Most of these bans and restrictions began in the period between 2009-2011. Here is a list of such bans.

Igbos are the major importers of Okada but they seem to be showing solidarity with the state government because it relates to security. They also value lives like the Yorubas. Many of the undocumented riders who claim to be from the North are not even Nigerians

Whether is Keke it okada business, it is a state of emergency threatening the socio-political security of any state. It's s misnomer. Actually, the abject failure of government from the first advent of Buhari in 1983,triggered this social misnomer. Which sane or organized city in the world tolerates this mess- bikes and Keke?
I'll say it again. Lagos can't contain everyone. If people don't want to obey the law ,they might want to leave Lagos.

That is true. That is why are foot soldiers used by evil people in the north when they want to strike against their neighbors. I heard guns are smuggles inside this okada by these miscreant and use to perpetuate crimes .It good they have been banned. But i wish Keke was not part of the ban.We really missed them..though they can be unruly on our road sometimes but they are more safer than using okada.

All SE and SS states have long banned okada for many years now, at least in their state capitals and other major cities.
If Lagos decides to ban it for whatever reason, then that's the state government's preregotive.

However, Lagos still remains one of the world's worst cities to live in, and nothing would bring me back there since I left many years ago. This city is killing more dreams than it is helping to actualize. Millions of Lagosians have merely existed through life instead of actually living it.

For God's sake, how can people be earning less than 100k monthly yet they still have to wake up as early as 4am only to return as late as 11pm and yet end up spending up to half of their income on transportation. The funny thing is that such lifestyle would hardly give them the space to think and have sober reflection.

So sad.
