The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday exercised its constitutional powers to deregister political parties that failed to meet established criteria.

At a press conference in Abuja, Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, announced that following an assessment of the 92 political parties in Nigeria, the commission decided to re-register 74 of them.

He said the affected parties failed to meet the criteria provided for by section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which include: “breach of any of the requirements for registration as a party, failure to win at least 25% of the votes cast in one state in a presidential election or 25% of the votes cast in one local government area, and failure to win at least one ward in a Chairmanship election, one seat in the national or state assembly election or one seat in a councilorship election”.

By the end of its assessment, INEC said only 18 political parties survived, including one registered after the elections and another that obtained a court order to avoid being deregistration.

Here are the remaining 18 parties:

The proliferation of mushroom political parties is the bane of a vibrant opposition politics in Nigeria. These are paperweight political parties with little or no input to our democracy. Methinks the list should be further whittled down to say 8 at most.

But it will do Nigeria more good if Independent Candidature is introduced in our electoral laws. The party system has failed in Nigeria. Nigerian political parties and her members lack clear cut out ideologies. They are all flying blind and switch sides at will. It really sucks.

Anyways, the benefits of having your business registered cannot be overemphasized. It engenders public confidence in your brand and wins you more sales. You look more professional too. Boot Party also survived? Abi na joke? grin Boot Party indeed. Nigeria has just two parties: APC and PDP. Others are just for washing of hands and feet when things go awry for the juggernauts in the two main parties.

A TWO-PARTY SYSTEM WILL BE the best thing to work for our darling country.

Just like the years of SDP and NRC.

A system being used by the Greatest nation on Earth!

A two-party system is a party system where two major political parties dominate the political landscape.
At any point in time, one of the two parties typically holds a majority in the legislature and is usually referred to as the majority or governing party while the other is the minority or opposition party.

God bless Nigeria.
