Lameness and Paralysis in Broiler Chicken

Lameness in broiler chickens is becoming a common problem mostly associated with genetic selection for rapid growth, management and infection. Bone and Joint infection as well skeletal abnormalities as linked with fast in growth during the first weeks of life. Rapid weight gain causes excessive torque and shear forces at the articular surface of the femur, tibia and the free thoracic vertebra in particular and this predisposes bird to injury and infection.

Leg problems and developmental disorders of long bones can be affected by genetics, breeder nutrition, incubation, infectious diseases, and environmental stressors caused through the life of the broiler.

Nutrition plays a key role in obtaining high quality bone tissue.Among the nutrients, calcium and phosphorus are the main formers of the mineral matrix, contributing with 95%. In chicken, calcium is the mineral found in the greatest quantity, being present almost entirely (99%) in the bone tissue, being required in quantity greater than any other mineral. Inequality of cations and anions in the diet may have influenced the increase of leg problems in broilers, since they are fast-growing chicken. Several alterations of this stability can generate damages in the performance of the
chickens.

Efforts should be made in feeding your broiler chicken with high-quality broiler starter feeds. With the right kind of nutrients and minerals.
So that they can have a well-formed and body mass that is normally associated with fast-growing chickens like the broiler.

Quality feed
Add calcium it will help in reducing paralysis and lameness in broiler chicks. There is always a need to add calcium or other vital minerals in some cases where nutrients are deficient. And elements in their feeds i.e for instances if there is no enough calcium in their feed. You can add calcium to it. It will improve the strength and quality of their bones.

Avoid cutting corners and feeding your baby chicks with just scratch grains. And other treats that lacks the basic nutritional requirements of a standards quality feed.

Proper nutrition and well-formulated feed will always prevent most leg disorders in poultry. Especially rapid growing birds like broiler chickens
