In I Samuel 15:35b and the Lord repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.

What does it mean, and the Lord repented?

Yes the Lord repented not as humans will. 'Repented' in this case simply means in a sorry state or in a state of grieve.

This same statement was also made in Genesis 6:6 when God was in a state of grieve for making man.

In any case God's plan is always accomplished, though he was disappointed but never surprised because there is eternal plan for whatever man's action brings.

How do you know the right religion or God if every the scriptural records of good are infallible? (Bible, Quran, agmas, tipitaka, Vedas and the rest)

Can't this be said to every religion?

I have not come here to assert that my religion is the right or yours is the wrong. Whether there be knowledge or prophesies or tongues that people have portrayed to have originated from their religion, they will all fail. Only one thing will stand, LOVE. Love for God and love for fellow human.

I have replied someone else that, God deals with everyone based on the specific instructions he has given them and it all boils down to that summarized commandment.

In love there is no religion!

Alitair:

But God sees the future. How didn't he see both Saul and humans going astray..?
The evidence of seeing and knowing the future is in the provision of a contingency plan.
All knowing is not just a description, it is an evidential description. He has a suitable plan for every eventuality, that's an apt description of an 'all knowing' entity.

Regretted is the meaning

And if you check further than that verse you would understand it was justified.

Btw, it was the children of Israel that lamented they needed a king to be like other nations too.

God already had his plan for them but since they couldn't wait he sent Samuel to annoint their choice for them so it wasn't his own choice he regretted on.

God gave man the freewill to make choice, think and make decisions and if he wanted to be overiding the choice of man because he has all powers then he would have made us like animals instead.

God having power over past and present doesn't mean man's freewill and choices doesn't shape what the future becomes just like Adam and Eve did, just like Abraham did with haggi etc

I also need an explanation of this. Cos he is a perfect God, why should He now repent?

God is mysterious

1 Chronicles 21:15 And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Amos 7:6 The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.

Jonah 3:10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

The repentance of God shows he's a merciful God

OP it's not what you think? grin

I read this guys above and I wonder if their God is all knowing!

A God that has absolute control and knowledge of the future needs not repent!

God should be above regrets!

Genesis 6:6 (RSVA) And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.

''Repented'' there means He regretted, felt sorry or felt disappointed because of His decision to make Saul King over Israel. This you can tell if you read up the events leading to that statement. You shouldn't take sentences out of context and try to find meanings to them in isolation.

Understanding the Hebrew Word

Setting aside the meaning of the Greek word we translate repent, let’s look at the Old Testament verses that use the word “nacham” and in Engish are translated repent.  Let’s remember, the Hebrew word “nacham” is defined to mean “to breathe strongly, be sorry, pity, etc.”  These are clearly emotions and they can be applied to God because we know God has emotions (that explains why, created in God’s image, man also has emotions).  Now, let’s apply the Hebrew word’s meaning in a few verses:

Gen 6:6  And it repented [sorrowed] the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

Gen 6:7  And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth [sorrowed] me that I have made them.

1 Sam 15:11  It repenteth [sorrowed] me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

What does it mean, and the Lord repented?
He treated his own fcukup.
Same way God didn't see Soddom and Gomorah coming....
Same way God didn't see Eve disobeying....
Same way God didn't know the exact outcome of the first world he created.......

I could go on listing inconsistencies from the Bible ,but I won't.... misconceptions nullify judgment!!!
Christianity is the most illogical set of thoughts imposed on fools through fear.
