HTTP error 404 (hyper text transfer protocol) simply means not found. Basically it means that the page you are trying to open could not be found on the website.
This could be a client-side situation which means either the page has been moved or the URL was not updated accordingly, or that you have made mistake in the spelling of the URL.

There's another one called Error 500; which means internal server error, which means there server can't process your request.

If you're asking why it is specifically called 404 and 500? I don't really know it just a code assigned to it in web and computer terminology, just like your University course codes like bio 101 and pys 201.

Websites are combination of webpages, linked to one another.

Webpages are files, just like Images and Songs are.

When you key in the domain name of a website, e.g www.facebook.com, your browser opens a file called index.html or index.php on that domain.

That is the homepage.
If there is no file called index.html or index.php on that domain,

All browsers are programmed to return a 404 error, which simply means, the file does not exist!

Error - Mistake
404 - Dog meat

Therefore Error 404, is when you eat the wrong dog meat.
