A coalition of Civil Society Organizations, CSOs says the Anti-Social Medial Bill currently before the senate for promulgation into law is inconsistent with Nigeria’s international obligations.

The CSOs numbering 110 said at a briefing in Abuja on Wednesday that the bill is draconian and a modified version of the defeated ”Bill for an Act to Prohibit Frivolous Petitions and other Matters Connected Therewith, 2015, sponsored under the 8th National Assembly”.

”The bill which also targeted the internet and on-line media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, WhatsApp, and the like, was dropped by the 8th Senate following an outcry by the people in 2016,” they said.

They maintained that the latest attempt by this 9th senate to resuscitate an obnoxious bill that had hitherto been unanimously rejected by the people constitutes an assault on the people and a flagrant assault on the 1999 constitution as amended which guarantees the rights of everyone including to freedom of expression.

”The State Social Order is founded on ideals of freedom, Equity and justice, and the privacy of citizens, their homes, correspondence, telephone conversations, and telegraphic communications guaranteed and protected,” the CSOs insisted.

The group noted that the Anti-Social Media Bill which has been disguised as a private member bill in the Senate seeks to give the executive arm of government outright powers to regulate the internet and control https://signaturetv.org/anti-social-media-bill-inconsistent-with-nigerias-international-obligations-csos/

Freedom of expression on social media isn't something that should deserve such level of political concerns.
