Wrestler Dies In Lagos by Kennyblues(m): 8:28am On Dec 21, 2010
A Nigerian professional wrestler, Christopher Okechukwu, popularly known as De Lion Man, died on Sunday after losing his heavyweight title fight to a fellow Nigerian, Power Lee, at the National Stadium, Lagos.

The championship, tagged the Survival of the Fittest, No Retreat, No Surrender, is organised by Ultimate Wrestling and Charity Organisation of Nigeria in conjunction with DAAR Communications, Accolades and Ratinwa Communications.

An eyewitness account claimed that De Lion Man, who came from Anambra State, collapsed outside the venue shortly after the fight and died while being rushed to hospital.

But founder of the Ultimate Wrestling and Charity Organisation, who is also a heavyweight champion, Osita Ofor, popularly known as Ultimate Commander, claimed in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Monday that he noticed that the late wrestler was not fit and that he stopped the fight.

He said, ”He started well but a few minutes into the fight, I noticed that he was not strong enough to continue so I called for the fight to be stopped. When I inquired about his fight history, I was told he had just recovered from illness and had not had enough training before the fight.

”I organised the fight in honour of Nigerian Wrestling Board of Control and the turn-out was alright. De Lion Man did not die in the ring; he probably died on his way home.”

He added that there were medical personnel at the venue who attended to all injured wrestlers and that De Lion Man would have been attended to if he had collapsed in the ring or at the venue

This is not the first time it is happening in Nigeria. 'Indomitable Fearless' got injured and died after a wrestling bout in Nigeria about a decade ago. Most of those who call themselves professional Wrestlers in Nigeria can best be described as weightlifters or body builders. They have no clue about what wrestling is about. Professional wrestling is highly scientific. You have to learn how to beat your opponent without killing him and how not to get killed in the process. The top wrestlers in the WWE are highly trained athletes who know the human anatomy well; they know how to really hurt you without necessarily killing you.

Our Nigerian wrestlers are just not it. For example 'indomitable fearless' whom I talked about earlier, died after his opponent 'The African Undertaker' tried the real Undertaker's finishing move on him. The 'African undertaker' did not know that Undertaker always has his opponents head between his thighs and not smashing their head against the canvas (the former will de-mobilise you, the latter will break your neck and probably get you killed). This grave error was the cause of the unfortunate death of the young man those years ago. I am sure even AIT that helped organise the show and which will still have tapes of it in their archives do not know this.

Whatever you do do not try the moves you see on WWE at home or elsewhere (even if your biceps are bigger than olumo rock), it is not acting and people can get seriously hurt or die. For crying out loud this guys spill blood! Yet most Nigerians think it is a joke.

BTW when are we going to see a Nigerian Wrestler in the WWE? Ghana already has Kofi Kingston.

Does that mean they don't certify wrestlers to be medically fit before the fight? embarassed May be African science has been used against the wrester by his opponent undecided
Re: Wrestler Dies In Lagos by VALIDATOR: 4:18pm On Dec 21, 2010
Here we go again. Juju,African science, bla bla bla.
Maclatunji has said it all.It has absolutely nothing to do with jazz.

Just to add a lil sumthing:
Which doctor certified him medically fit for such an undertaking?
If the fight was stopped because he seemed medically unfit, which doctor checked him up before he left the stadium?
Did the organizers or his promoter insure him with any insurance company? abi the guy just die for fun?

I go with maclatunji on this: It's all about lack of professionalism not only with the wrestler but with all those involved.

Re: Wrestler Dies In Lagos by Theblessed(f): 4:52pm On Dec 21, 2010
[b][size=18pt]Oh this is so, so sad!!! Imagine, what ignorance can lead to!

A young man has just gone, forever! In my view the family of the late Wrestler should sue the organisers of this fight in particular Mr Osita Ofor himself for having not done his job, properly.

Nigerians and their long throat for money, is a curse!

These wrestlers, if at all, were not medically/physically and psychologically assessed and certified fit to fight this title, before allowing them to even step anywhere near the stadium let alone get in the ring.  If it was done properly, this would not have happened.

Even after the fight, Mr Osita Ofor and his Organisation did not carry out any post fight medical assessment otherwise, they would have identified discrepancies and pay medical attention to him immediately yet, they did not so and if they did what was their findings/result

Now a young man is dead and he is here giving us crass excuses - he should thank his stars that, he is doing this, in ignorant Africa else, he would have sworn never again in his life.

Here, people are joking with peoples lives.  Imagine.  Mr Ofor is fully aware that this guy had just been recovering from illness and still went on to organise this fight without thorough investigation into the man's conditions thus, persuaded him to fight.

I could hear Mr Ofor supporters here, claiming after all, the guy is an adult and he made the decision to fight - yes, yes and yes he made the decision but you forgot that when people have gone through serious illnesses they are emotional and psychologically vulnerable and would agree to any thing and that's not the time to pose such ideas to them.

Now, Mr Ofor and co. have conned  him to his untimely death and his blood rest on their heads and this would remain in their consciences forever, Amen! angry

My friend that was there at the fight told me about this. This is way too bad. How much did they pay him for him to risk his life like that knowing that he is not physically fit, or is it cos of pride? R.I.P man. God help us all to make the right decisions before we take any risk, especially when it comes to life and death affairs.
Re: Wrestler Dies In Lagos by sley4life(m): 5:31pm On Dec 21, 2010
May his soul r.i.p. They must do something about our wrestlers in this country. Its about experience mentally not just physical strength. Its almost same thing that almost happened to Samuel Peter that Klitschko wanted to kill Samuel in the the boxing ring.Instead of preparing he went to joint drinking beer
