Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau said he is isolating himself after his wife returned from the coronavirus hotspot of Europe and started showing a “low fever” and “mild flu-like symptoms,” according to officials.

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, 44, started feeling sick late Wednesday, shortly after getting back to Canada from a London speaking engagement, officials said in a statement.

The country’s 48-year-old leader is joining his wife in self-isolating at home as they await results to her coronavirus test, the statement said.

The PM is showing no symptoms himself and will continue holding meetings about the response to coronavirus — just “virtual meetings” or by phone rather than face-to-face, the statement said.

“The doctor’s advice to the Prime Minister is to continue daily activities while self-monitoring, given he is exhibiting no symptoms himself,” the statement said.

“However, out of an abundance of caution, the Prime Minister is opting to self-isolate and work from home until receiving Sophie’s results,” it said.

France's culture minister has coronavirus

French Culture Minister Franck Riester has been infected by the coronavirus outbreak, a source close to the culture ministry said on Monday, adding the 46-year-old member of government was "feeling well".

"The minister tested positive today" after displaying symptoms, the ministry said.

It noted that Riester spent several days last week at the country's lower house National Assembly, where five virus cases were confirmed earlier.

The prime minister's office said that the rules for ministers with the virus "are the same for all French people" including acting with caution and taking measures to minimise the chances of the disease spreading.

US Senate staffer tests positive for coronavirus

A staffer for US Sen. Maria Cantwell has tested positive for coronavirus — the first known congressional worker to catch the virus, her office said Wednesday.

The unidentified patient, who works out of Cantwell’s Washington, DC, office, has had no known contact with the senator or other lawmakers, Cantwell’s office said in a statement.

The diagnosis led Cantwell to close her DC office for the remainder of the week. Remaining staffers will work remotely.

Cantwell, a Democrat who represents Washington state, asked other staffers to get tested in light of the positive results.
