The bill to ban the importation and use of generator in Nigeria at this time is just testament to the fact that we don’t have strategic thinkers in government. At such a time as this when Nigeria is in the face of serious power problem, if you ban the importation and use of generator without firstly fixing the problem of power, how then do SMEs survive and grow in the country? We should rather be thinking and working on how to encourage the growth of SMEs, small businesses that depend on power to sustain their operations. Probably the Senator who sponsored the bill might think that the bill if passed into law could compel us to fix the power problem in the country at all cost and by all means; it is a little bit understandable, but it is not a wonderful idea. Considering the peculiar nature of Nigeria, such a law, I think, will not compel those in government to fix the problem of power in the country. It will rather promote elitist possession of sources of power supply, while the masses and incapable Nigerians will suffer! So, such a bill should not be allowed to scale. If those in the National Assembly really mean well for the power sector in Nigeria, then they should come up with laws to compel their counterparts in the Executive to fix the problem of power drastically.
Well-meaning citizens of the country should do their bits to push for the rejection of the bill to ban the importation and use of generator in Nigeria, just as I will do mine; it is a useless bill.
