The rate coronavirus is spreading across the world, many countries including US and UK governments are blaming themselves for not responding timely and proactively by closing their borders and restricting international flights from affected countries. Unfortunately, Nigerian government have not learnt any lesson from the countries mentioned above. I understand the government is considering economic implications of taking such a drastic but most effective method of containing the virus at early stage. As at this morning, three cases of the virus has been confirmed and all were brought into the country by victims from affected countries, Italy and UK. Though, the action of second screening and pronounced self isolation by Federal government is a weak-soft approach and would backfire for the different reasons: Self Isolation will be ineffective in this part of the world due to our lifestyle, settlement, culture and economic situation of Nigerians. In isolating self, unavailability of necessary care and kits for sustenance might frustrate individual in question to backout Inadequate centres across Nigeria to arrest COVID-19 cases if it should spread widely as a result of second contacts affected from main carrier. Nigerians are calling for immediate closure of our borders as well as banning of foreigners from affected countries momentarily and government should not priotize the economic state of the nation above the healthy state of the citizenries. Also, because of monies involved for embezzlement directly or indirectly, politics is playing out on coronavirus in Nigeria. FG is handling the COVID-19 pandemic too mild in Nigeria by reacting instead of being proactive with drastic, harsh but cost effective in the long run for Nigerians. Remember, death toll recorded from affected countries indicates that the aged are more exposed as I hope the goverment would act now because delay of border closure is dangerous and growth retarded in the long run. I pray God Almighty heal the world! It is now dawn on us that our government officials and family members were part of reasons the borders and air space were not closed early as most Nigerians suggested. Some senators are now confronted with trust issue over their counterparts whom returned from London, UK( Covid-19 High Incidence) and refused to self isolate themselves or approach NCDC for test. Also, Abba Kyari has bèen confirmed positive just as Atiku Abubarka's son, Mohammed. While Governor Bala mohammed hàs gone on self isolation, many other governors are considering same move haven been in a meeting with Gov. Bala Mohammed. The cases in Nigeria are increasing on daily basis and the earlier we have total lockdown in Lagos, Abuja and affected states for 21 days, the better for us as a nation. I hope FG will act fast because delay is dangerous. |

The situation is a very dicey one for the government. When the land border was closed last year, prices went up and there was a lot of uproar, so that from a leadership position, it becomes difficult to drastically stop all flights knowing that we produce nothing and that the same people urging you to lock anything lockable will be the first and same people to say you did not make provision for food to be available. Then there is also the challenge of locking the nation against legitimate Nigerians who want to return home, do you also deny them entry? Leadership is hard because anything you do is going to be considered wrong especially if things go south. 1 Like |

9jatriot: Wrong. You can still allow cargo in while restricting human movement. It's not as difficult as you think. As it is now, only Nigerian should be allowed into the country but they have to under 14 days quarantine before they should be allowed to go home. What is difficult about that? 1 Like |

Npfn: I am highly disappointed in the way and manner President M. Buhari and all his cabinet members, especially Health, Aviation and Interior Ministers are handling COVID-19 pandemic situation in Nigeria. Press statement from Dr. Mammowora(Health Minister) showed how irresponsible and unconcerned about Nigerians. With over 12 cases now, I'm afraid our leaders will live to regret this nonchalant action of theirs! God will heal our land. |
