Hi everyone,

This is for Fresh Graduates who are yet go for their service year or complete the NYSC programme, please take time and read this.

Now that you are done with NYSC: What do you do while you search for that decent job?

First, let us reset your mind:

>> Just a fraction of you will get a job within the first month (the "you" here are mainly those whose parents are bigshots/heavy hitters in the society, applicants who will not attend interviews but will have letters of appointments sent via company's drivers to their houses. Shocking but that is the way it is).
A small number will get within three to six months. Some more within a year, some further within two years, majority within three to five years (that is, if you don't end up going back for masters degree just to kill time.)

>> Sadly, there will be those who will roam around for upward of eight to ten years without ever getting a decent job. They will end up going into business, which they might likely succeed in. It then makes one to wonder why they spent so many years chasing jobs when they could have put their entrepreneurship skills into practice right after NYSC.

Define what you want to do after your service year and start preparing towards it. And never relent on your efforts no matter how hard it seems to be.

Apply for jobs, scholarships or funding for your business proposal even before your service year ends. It's not never too early. Few of your colleagues are already doing what we're trying to suggest here for you and we're here to help you too smiley

Dear corp members, have you really given a thought about life after your passing out parade whenever you are rounding up your programme?
Quite a few have done this and some already have plans of either;

-Starting up (or continuing) a business
-Getting a job
-Furthering their studies

Most persons fall into either of these three categories and we have quite a few nuggets for you and they are to prepare you for future before your POP. Here they are below;

1. Get a professional written CV and cover letter for yourself from experts and begin sending them out to firms that are recruiting. Especially for graduate entry/Internship positions.

2. Create and update your LinkedIn account profile with information in your curriculum vitae. And stay active on the platform, connecting with and interacting with firms and professionals in your field of study.

3. Stay up to date with available job vacancies that align with your discipline always. Subscribe to job email alerts from websites, turn on notification for vacancies on LinkedIn and connect with HR firms and experts online for available openings.

4. Take a professional course and be certified!
The importance of a professional course cannot be be over emphasised. Certain jobs required a professional completed course one of the minimum requirements for consideration for a role. Most professional disciplines have courses associated with them e.g. ACCA, ICAN for accountants, CIPM for Management graduates, HSE, ISPON, OSHA for safety related disciplines etc. Find one important to your field of study and use your service year to complete the course and get certified/chartered. Discounts are usually given to corp members in most of these trainings which is another reason you have to get one, if you haven't yet.

5. If you intend to further your studies through a scholarship, you subscribe to email alerts from top scholarship websites. Also, ensure you have the minimum requirements for application for a scholarship such as IELTS, TOEFEL, SAT, University transcript or degree, valid form of identification, etc.

Note:
These requirements vary for the type of scholarships.

6. Define what you want to do after your service year and start preparing towards it. And ever relent on your efforts no matter how hard it seems to be.

Apply for jobs, scholarships or funding for your business proposal even before your service year ends. It's not never too early. Few of your colleagues are already doing what we're trying to suggest here for you and we're here to help you too
