The Libyan government pulled a fast one on the UK. They believed that he only had 3 months to live, but he is actually doing fine. However, I hear the reason why he was released was due to the fact that BP has oil contracts with the Libyan government and Gaddafi wanted him released.

In order to understand the whole story you have to go back to the 1988 bombing by a US naval ship of an Iranian passenger jet.  This passenger jet was "mistakenly" hit by a US naval missile and this resulted in all 266 passengers on board being killed.  the iranians swore vengeance for this dastardly act, it is alleged that the lockerbie bombing was the retaliatory act.  However in order to cover their tracks the iranians are said to have used a palestinian terrorist organisation known as popular front for the liberation of palestine General Command (PFLP GC) to undertake the bombing on their behalf.
