You are looking at ~$2500 for the transmission, but that one you have is still good, you just have to reverse all you've done(making sure they didn't jump wires or put gear oil in the transmission.

What kind of code is it giving?

The transmission is still good 9 out of 10 times, it just you stoping to think of how it works  and what looks out of place, which are sensors that works  with computers, and fluid that runs the system(one of them is off So look at the fluid(dexIII) or read computer codes.

If you keep throwing money at it without using your head the high school level mechanic will catch it all.Go online and read up about transmissons and Xterra

Thing is it might not eve n be the transmission

its an auto, it transmits from gear one t o 3 then starts revving and doesnt accelerate anymore.

when the gearbox was brougt down the fibre in it was burnt out and the oil that we got out was dark brown. will go online for it thanks.

You may want to try fluid flush and filter change for start, maybe someone started with te wrong fluid and everything went downhill from there.

1. towing on rear wheels.
2. wrong ATF.
