Prof. Tunde Salako, Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Yaba, Lagos, has appealed to physicians to critically examine their patients before directing them to undergo COVID-19 test.

Salako said on his verified Twitter handle, that patients with upper respiratory tract were being directed to go for COVID-19 test without proper assessment.

“Experience, since the beginning of our drive through testing in NIMR, has shown that some doctors are refusing to, even assess their patients once their complaints are about upper respiratory tract..

“Such patients have often been sent to go and get COVID-19 test done. In some of the cases the results were negative.

“Patient probably has other medical issues, which if not treated on time, may lead to complications or death.

“Physicians should please review their patients before panicking to send them for COVID-19 test. It’s time for call to duty,” Salako said in his Twitter handle.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the institute started a drive through testing of COVID on March 30, in partnership with Lifebank led by Temie Giwa-Tubosun.

NIMR was established in 1977 to conduct research on diseases of public health importance in Nigeria.

See this man that called himself a professor speaking like a layman. So doctors should examine patients critically before refering them for malaria tests as well? Professor, just incase you have forgotten, the tests are meant to either confirm or negate suspicion of an ailmemt. It is a vital part of the diagnosis process.
Despite the number of negative results in the US and Uk (as examples) did you hear them advise doctors to stop referring people for tests? I am glad you mentioned that some were postive. What if the doctors of those positive ones allowed them to roam about? Professor, take your time o o. This is not the time to say rubbish if you have nothing tangible to say. Don't risk the lives of people because you want media attention.
Your statement is grossly stupid and very irresponsible.

It's worrisome that everyone with similar symptoms wants a Covid-19 test.

It's a no brainer.
But, i understand it's because of the cost of performing the test for Covid-19 that he is indirectly hinting at anyway.

You are mad!!

Why wouldn't the doctor be scared of examining such a patient when he/she doesn't have PPE to protect him/herself?

Since you people are hoarding the PPEs for yourselves, do the examinations yourselves.

But the WHO is advocating for mass testing. The US has done millions of tests, UK is working towards doing 100k tests daily by month end. Mass testing is the only way of having an idea about the infection rate in a country.

Even South Africa is doing mass testing, so why is this man saying something else?

Doctors won't shy away from their responsibilities, it's left for the government to do her own part by providing PPE

Well, since we hailed the chadian soldiers and called for more dedication from the Nigerian counterpart, we may as well all call out the medical doctors.
They should know risk comes with their occupation. No one is saying they should expose themselves to unnecessary risk. They can take the necessary precautions and do what they are trained to do courageously.

The NCDC has already sent out the panicking message before this advice. We are told once anyone notice so and so symptoms they should go for COVID19 testing, in a way I do not blame some of the physicians. I think this advice came too late
Re: Tunde Salako: Doctors Should Examine Patients Before Suggesting COVID-19 Tests by adioolayi(m): 5:12am On Apr 06, 2020
I am sorry, I can't blame them. They stand the risk of exposure more than anyone....The Government should provide enough protective wears for them...This will boost their confidence. Are we expecting Drs, because of call to duty, to just expose themselves as if they are not humans or they don't have families too If Government do the right thing, they will also do the necessary thing 100%.

As at now, na commonsense them they take handle Patients....Who wan die??

Examination is examination... The times doctors usually send patients for HIV tests, is it all the time the result comes out positive? NO, but they still do it... So please just let the doctors be... by the way over 50 billion naira have been donated so far for that cause.

What a stupid and irresponsible thing to say

What is such examination likely to do ?
Rather than ask government to increase testing capacity and number of testing centres

Open more walk-in laboratory testing centres, provide testing kits and equipments, employ more medical scientists, give them PPE, let patients go to the walk-in labs for the Covid-19.

This is how other countries are achieving their high number of laboratory tests. Patients should go direct to the lab if they want to. The physicians will continue to run away from patients with similar symptoms.
