POWER OF DATA-DRIVEN INSIGHT IN HEALTHCARE DELIVERY[b][/b]
It is no longer news that our healthcare system is lagging behind in terms of inadequate manpower; both in number and specialties, infrastructural inadequacies and lack of modern therapeutic and diagnostic equipment.
But today, we are going to talk about another very important element that is conspicuously missing in our healthcare system. That is none other than data driven insight in clinical decision making and response to health emergencies. Despite the importance of data driven healthcare interventions to healthcare professionals, in the delivery of efficient and cost-effective healthcare services, it is rarely talked about in this clime! Data driven intervention has to do with combination of digital patient care documentation and, infusion of Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning application in healthcare delivery process.
However, we cannot talk about data driven insight in healthcare delivery if we have not digitalized our healthcare documentation. As at today, less than one percent of our healthcare facilities have adopted digital documentation of patient care in their practice. Even at that, most of their documentations are stored in isolated information silos, resident in their local servers.
The implication of isolated storage of digital patient record documentation and management is that we can not generate healthcare data in real time to inform data driven intervention at community level, state level, national level and even global level. The way out of this lack of data driven insight in healthcare delivery is the adoption of a cloud-based and centralized health information management system, that permits administrators at the healthcare facility level, local government level, State level and Federal level to independently manage data generated within their geographical space.
You may now understand why all health data about Nigeria and most African countries are mere retrospective analysis of minor segment of the society, which are then extrapolated to represent the general population. In comparison with societies with real-time and dynamic database, superimposed with artificial intelligence and machine learning, such crudely collected data has little or no significance at the time of analysis, in informed clinical decision making and policy formulation.
It is in attempt to fundamentally address this gap in information management in our healthcare delivery ecosystem, that HealthServes project was established. One of the key objectives of HealthServes project is to enable us leverage on the power of real-time data in clinical decision making and improve our response to health emergencies. With real-time data streaming from various healthcare facilities across the country, any emergence of infectious disease or spike in disease pattern will be instantly detected in a matter of seconds and responded to, immediately.
