Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr has expressed frustration in getting good locally-based players into the Super Eagles fold.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has demanded he spends more time in Nigeria and also work more with players from the domestic league for him to continue as the country’s coach.

Rohr came under stinging attack last month for not inviting any home-based player into the upcoming AFCON 2021 qualifying double header with Sierra Leone.

The former Bayern Munich defender defended his preference for those playing abroad on the ground of the quality of the players being t invited.

According to an Instagram live chat with Collin Udoh, Rohr said that he has been a staunch believer of NPFL players since his appointment almost four years ago.

He, however, pointed out that the quality of the NPFL players in recent times has gone down, necessitating his decision to invite only the best legs from Europe and other countries abroad.

“I’ve invited about 24 local players since I was appointed. Funnily, most of them get a contract in Europe almost immediately.

“It’s difficult getting local players who are better than the ones we already have. That’s why CHAN is important”, added Rohr.

Even Caf knows the quality of football in Africa cannot be compared to Europe, America's and indeed other parts of the world hence they created the Africa Nations Championship for home based players playing in their home leagues. The aim is to help give grassroot players the opportunity to get higher level of training, exposure and experience because most national teams in Africa rely heavily on Europe based players who on daily basis get the highest possible training with the latest facilities, highest possible exposure and experience. At this level talent is not enough.
The NFF if they are really serious about making home based players the bedrock of our national should make it their primary project to work closely with NPLF and the clubs in ensuring that :
Since most clubs are owned by State govts, there is a leverage for the clubs to run football academy programmes for u-8, u-10, u-12, U-13, U-16 for male and female in all public primary and secondary schools. While the programme can be sustained through registration fee and sale of academy kits, it will afford the clubs the opportunity to develop a football philosophy, develop both coaches and players accordingly, scout the best players, earn better transfer and players compensation fees,, create empathy in the minds of the public especially the youth for massive followership thus adding value for patronage in media rights, merchandising, match ticketing, match promotions, etc.
I believe that except this is done every other good effort at our football will be hit and miss. The average Nigerian home based player may be talented but he is very much unprepared for the highest level of football at the senior national team. The standard of football in Nigeria started going down from the early 1990s .
Truth be told Nigerians are about the most passionate football lovers you can find anywhere in the world but we lack a football culture, be it social or economic. Edson Arantes do Nascimento once said Nigeria would win the World Cup before the year 2000, after witnessing in 1985 the talent and tenacity of the Baby Eagles when they SHOCKED the world to win the first FIFA U-17 World Cup beating Germany of all teams in the final. We are the ones delaying ourselves from fulfilling that prophecy. Not until stop we stop freestyling.
