Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has said that the alleged ill-treatment of Nigerians in China has been sorted out by both countries.



Several Nigerians were seen in a viral video recently being harassed in Guangzhou area of China.

The National Assembly leadership and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, met with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Zhou Pingjian, over the issue.

Mr Gbajabiamila, however, said on Wednesday on Twitter that he was glad the matter had been resolved.

“I’m glad the matter of maltreatment of Nigerians in China has been sorted out between both countries,” he said.

“The ambassador has communicated his findings and we hope that moving forward communication will be swift and clear and due process will be observed even where there are allegations of wrongdoing by citizens of other countries.

“It is important that we follow up on this and Nigerians can legitimately go about their business in the People’s Republic of China.”



“I spoke with the Acting Consul General, Mr Razak Lawal whose robust defence of the rights of Nigerians in China went viral and I salute the gentleman diplomat for his dedication to duty and his patriotism,” the speaker added.

Mr Onyeama, however, met the Chinese ambassador again on Tuesday and spoke with the media on the alleged incident.

“There was flight which conveyed a group of Nigerians to Guangzhou in which some Nigerians tested positive for COVID-19,” he said.

“Amongst the Nigerians, was a lady who owned a restaurant, a Nigerian restaurant frequented predominantly and almost exclusively by Africans mainly Nigerians. The Chinese authorities obviously picked up on this that there was this group of people who had tested positive.

“And so, automatically demanded and insisted that they all be quarantined, with nobody allowed to come out in 14 days and if anybody came out from that quarantine that they should not be allowed in if it was a hotel, back into that hotel or that residence.

“So, they put in very, very strict measures to try to contain this outbreak which to them at that time, clearly seemed to have been within that community. Now, it was misinterpreted it appeared, by some of the Nigerians and Africans who could not understand why it seemed to be selective and targeting only themselves.

“Our officials in China made it clear that the communication could and should have been better if the authorities in Guangzhou had informed the African consulates, that this was the situation and these were the measures that they were putting in place and it made it a joint effort, that mutual suspicion would not have been there. And, of course, that was not done and that led to counter-narratives and exacerbated the situation.”

Uncle, if someone tests negative and you end up in 14 days quarantine and you still come into contact with someone who tests positive or exposed to positive people, you are still at risk of infection and spreading the virus. There was a restaurant owner who tested positive and the restaurant was frequented by Nigerians.

This is the reason coronavirus is not like HIV. If you test negative for HIV after the window period and you dont stick your organ into the wrong place without protection, you have no reason to assume you may be HIV positive. But with coronavirus it is not the same thing. Corona is spread through droplets in the air.

Apparently, there are details we dont know. When the videos started circulating, I felt there was more than the claims being made of racism. The incident was sad but it relates to quarantine. For a country devastated by a pandemic, it makes sense they will put in place strict measures to avoid another wave of infections.

Agreed to some of your claims. But there are different scenarios, except the Nigerian diplomat was lying which I doubted. He said those whose passports were seized were quarantined for 14 days after which they all turned negative...do I send you the link to the video?
These guys were intercepted upon arrival and were quarantined. The chinese govt officials didnt even allow them go before they said they'd quarantine them again for another 14 days, making 28 days. The results turned negative in the first 14 days of quarantining. The incubation period for covid-19 is 1-14 days mind you. Why go into quarantine for another 14 days after testing negative?

The chinese story was quite different as maintained by Onyema but there was no proof there was any restaurant belonging to Nigerians where customers and restaurant owner turned positive to covid-19.

In another scenario, onyema claimed they boarded a flight to another city in which the Nigerians turned positive ...which flight ? Was it same people whose passports were seized which our diplomat recovered in that video that traveled to another city?

Chinese officials were sacking Nigerian legal residents from their homes we learnt and as confirmed by victims for no known reason...they never had covid-19. Some Nigerians and african visitors too were ejected from their hotels...why didnt onyema harp on all these?

Well, as you can see, our local media had been rendered useless but the international news media would never lie to us because they've got nothing to gain or lose by saying the truth.

Gbajabiamiala May have been Compromised because the Chinese did Not admit to wrong doing, they keep denying And they have not briefed the Nigerians and apologized for seizing their passport forcefully until it was retrieved and they were sent on the streets and was followed by their police to wander about and was made to sleep on the streets without access to supermarket nobody allowed them inside even with their monies....
