Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of England, Wales, Scotland and its dominions, former Empress of India, head of the Commonwealth and head of the Royal House of Windsor is 94 today.

She is the granddaughter of King George V, of a German birth and whose queen (Mary) spoke her English with a German accent, being thoroughly German herself. The family's original name was Saxe-Corburg Gotha and it was advised that George V change this name for something more British,or at least more british-sounding to better blend with his people. In 1917 an incident happened that redefined things radically for the Saxes in the middle of the First World War (1914-1918). A German plane maker and pilot named Gotha flew a sortie and dropped bombs on London - a shocking and novel dimension of military attack at the time. This led to widespread riots and ire against Germanic peoples in the realm. The court was compelled to speed up work on changing the name of the ruling house and Lord Stamfordham, the lead king counsel, having combed the archives and finding no suitable name for the royal house, coined the word 'Windsor' and presented it for adoption by the king. It had a spacious airy and beautiful ring to it and was adopted. The Royal House of Windsor was born. This is trite history to British people.
Where I am going with this is this: tribal distinction is not peculiar to Africans but is also a reality among white people. Why is it a lingering liability and a cross for the man of colour while the whites have succeeded outstandingly in interpreting and managing it? And here is why immigration and assimilation is conceivable for Europeans while Africans preserve such differences to the point of shredding their societies. In Nigeria, even villages hardly mix completely much less towns. To gain acceptance in a state other than the state of your father's birth is an uphill task. Marriage means nothing in our agenda for integration.
Look at Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh and consort to the queen. His father was Danish and his mother Greek. When he came to England for love, he was requested to adopt a British name so he picked up Mountbatten, the name of his British uncle. This name was later incorporated into the ruling house's name in 1960 by a proclamation of the Crown. What shapes the mindset with which these people manage identities and loyalties that has so eluded us? We need to find out and we need to address it. It could as well be that our success depends on how we accept people's changing national and tribal identity and allow those people to be true to their new nationalism among us without fear of being denied. Yes there was Edward VIII, the king who abdicated the throne "for love" on the surface but indeed had a thing for Adolf Hitler during the onset of the Second World War. But the British crown overcame even that and while other royal houses across Europe were toppled between those two wars, the House of Windsor has endured and their nation prospered. We can even recall that while George V held court in London, his first cousins was king of Russia,Tsar II. (He would later be overthrown the year the Windsor house was christined and killed along with his family during the Bolshevik Revolution in October that year, bringing that dynasty to and end).
It is possible that the dark dungeons of our heart is where we lock up people who would have re-energised us if only we allowed them to become part of us completely as they wished in the first place. It is possible that dismantling that prison holds the key to our ever moving forward as a people.
