Nigerians May Defy Fresh Lockdown Extension, Says Bishop by iwaeda: 11:22am On Apr 25, 2020 |
The Bishop of Diocese of Ife, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Olubunmi Akinlade, has advised the Federal Government to consider the economic implications of extending the lockdown beyond next week. He said some Nigerians might defy any fresh lockdown because the means of livelihood of many had been stopped due to the current lockdown and this had resulted in hunger. The cleric, in a statement on Friday, commended government efforts to halt the coronavirus pandemic in the country. He noted that Nigerians were going through hardship and, therefore, government should be cautious of extending the stay-at-home order. Akinlade said, “Extension of the lockdown is a double-edged sword. Don’t forget that a majority of Nigerians are daily income earners. So, they have to go out to earn a living. Government could succeed to keep them locked in and end up having more people dying of hunger than those who will die of the virus. “Know this, that should the lockdown continues, people will resist the exercise after a while even though it is for our good and safety. So, there must be a way whereby we can release the people to be able to go and at the same time educate them to practise safety measures in what they do. There has to be a lot of enlightenment at the grass roots because people must go out and earn a living. For the economically disadvantaged people, government palliative scarcely gets to them.” Commending the Lagos State Government in the way it is containimg the disease, the cleric charged government to treat Nigerians equally, stating that “the rule that applies to the poor should apply to the rich.” https://punchng.com/nigerians-may-defy-fresh-lockdown-extension-says-bishop/ |

Let's be frank to ourselves, this lockdown of a thing is just not working, the numbers keep increasing in high velocity. Effective use of face masks and massive testing are the way forward. |

It's not just a matter of 'may'. Certainly any further extension won't go down well with majority of the people whose means of livelihood have been badly hit. The government just has to think outside the box and device another means. |

baralatie:China, Covid-19 parent home don open their schools and markets. You can't lockdown a country and yet you're doing nothing to curtail the virus. E better make we die outside than dieing inside house. |

let's be frank people have tried for 4weeks without any palliatives. I fear for next week! I already listen to Lagos residents postulating they are going to work on Tuesday lockdown or no lockdown. |

Nigerians are indeed the encouragers of bad governance. It's amazing that despite the severe hunger many are going through, with no single help from the government, people are still not trooping out to massively protest this lockdown that has only made both the economic suffering and ironically the impact worse. It also stems from the fact that most elected officials got in because people's votes don't matter. If many of them know that their entering into office would depend on the actual votes of the people, then by now the lockdown would have been reviewed. After all in Nigeria,a man can win a governorship office via a SC ruling, despite having an aggregate vote tally far greater than the number of people that actually came out for voting. How do you expect such a person for eg to even consider what suffering people are passing through and whether some of them are dying in their homes just because of hunger and hardship arising from not being able to access healthcare or buy drugs to sustain them. |

baralatie:Rightful observation. The virus would have overwhelmed us by now. All the goverment need do is provide adequate palliative(s) for the citizenry while the lockdown lasts. Its as simple as that! |

Davash222:China lockdown and locked in its citizens in their rooms for close to 3 months.yet as developed as China was they were hiding figures of the dead from the world.they brought in the reserve military on the street to make absolutely nobody was strolling out from their rooms. this lockdown was not supposed to even last up the now but lagosians kept moving around kept traveling ,therefore giving the virus constant spread and likewise some places in ogun state giving us the same problems that happened in italy(people were disregarding the govt until boom the whole of Italy was on covid 19 fire). I am praying to God we don't go through such an experience |
