Wednesday raised an alarm that COVID-19 vaccination may be compulsory for all Nigerians if the lower House passes a bill that will give more powers to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The House members are Hon. Uzoma Nkem Abonta, representing Ukwa East-West Federal Constituency, Abia State; and Benjamin Mzondu, representing Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency, Benue state.

Appearing on Channels TV Sunrise Daily, Hon. Uzoma Nkem Abonta said that the Bill has already passed second reading, but the third reading had to be halted when members raised an alarm that they were yet to see the contents of the 55-page bill.

Hon. Uzoma Nkem Abonta stated that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila on Tuesday said members without copies of the bill should be given for their perusal.

The House member said he is worried that some sections of the bill make it indirectly compulsory for Nigerians to be vaccinated for COVID-19, which is against medical ethics and professionalism.

He said the bill seeks to give a certificate for any Nigerian who gets vaccinated for COVID-19.

Hon. Uzoma Nkem Abonta added that the certificate of the vaccination would then be required before a Nigerian makes any financial or other transactions.

He also stated that a part in the bill says that the bill overrides the ethics of medical practice which gives an individual the right to accept or reject any form of treatment.

When asked by the interviewers to buttress his point, Hon. Uzoma Nkem Abonta said that there is a lot of conspiracy theories surrounding the COVID-19 vaccination.

He said that the social media have been awash by these theories, hence the need for the House of Representatives to exercise caution on the bill. He also added that there is no need in rushing to pass the bill as there are other methods of combating COVID-19.

But the Hon. Tanko Sununu (Kebbi), House Committee Chair on Healthcare Services debunked the claims that the Quarantine Act review seeks to make it compulsory for all Nigerians to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

Nigerians have reacted on social media to Hon. Uzoma Nkem Abonta.

Ubabuike K Agbatah said, “It’s very dangerous when speaking publicly to speak hypothetically. And it’s very clear that Mr. Nkem-Abonta has bought into the propaganda in the social media sphere…it’s a pity.”

Kunle Giwa wrote, “I applaud the effort of the lawmaker at taking a keen look at the @NCDCgov bill so that it does give room for any form of ambiguity or lacuna that could be exploited to the detriment of our dear country in future.”

Nwachukwu Emeka@nwachukwum said, “I agree that the Honorable members should be given time to read the bill before passage!! But all the same, their fears as expressed are predicated on social media rumors and their motivation is rather from political correctness rather than altruism! !
