The tower opened to the public on February 14, 1983.

"On opening day the five levels of retail shops, galleries and restaurants quickly became New York’s most exclusive shopping destination," a history of the tower on its official website proclaims.
During construction, an artifact promised to the Metropolitan Museum of Art was destroyed.

Trump acquired property on which women's retailer Bonwit Teller sat after it closed its doors in 1979, and before he began demolition in 1980, he "promised the limestone reliefs of the dancing women to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which wanted them for its sculpture collection. The offer was conditional on his being able to remove them," the New York Times reported. But after Trump's crew "jackhammered them to bits," the Trump organization said that "the two-ton panels were 'without artistic merit,'" and that saving them would have delayed construction for months and cost $500,000. (Head here to read more about it.)

While Trump and the Trump Organization have always claimed the building is 68 stories tall, it's not.

The tower was built with 58 floors, but Trump explained to the New York Times that "because there was a soaring pink marble atrium and 19 commercial floors at the bottom, he could see no good reason not to list the first residential floor as the 30th floor. The pinnacle became the 68th—the height that appears in marketing materials, online search results and news articles to this day." To be fair, many buildings skip the 13th floor for superstitious reasons but the concept of more liberal "creative numbering" seems to have originated with Trump. Since he did it with Trump Tower and other buildings of his, he told the Times, "a lot of people have copied me."
Floors 14 through 26 are office space.

"They’re home to the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China," the New York Post reports.
Floors 30 through 68 are condominiums.

There are 263 apartments in the building, according to Trump International Realty.
Lately they haven't exactly been the most popular places to live.

There are currently 25 apartments on the sales market and five available for rent, according to StreetEasy. "This is clearly a remarkable situation and obviously spurred by one resident being the president of the United States," Kirk Henckels, the vice chairman of Stribling & Associates, told me back in March when I reported that there were 19 new listings since January 1.

Over the years the building has had quite a few celebrity tenants.

"Johnny Carson, Liberace, and Paul Anka had condominiums there in the 1980s, and Michael Jackson rented one in the 1990s," the New York Times reported. Jackson turned one of his duplex's bedrooms into a mirrored dance studio "In 2000, Bruce Willis closed on a place too." Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort has reportedly lived in the building since 2016, according to Curbed, which has a list of noteworthy current tenants.

The Trump campaign headquarters took over a sixth-floor space formerly occupied by "a warren of storage and studio space" used for the NBC show, according to the New Yorker.

Trump's personal office is on the 26th floor.

Like his apartment location, he clearly likes to be at the top.

The U.S. Secret Service had an office there but moved out in early August.

The agency moved its operations to a trailer "after a lease agreement between the General Services Administration and the Trump Organization fell apart" in July.

Visitors still have to go through Secret Service screening to get inside.

This week a sign promoting a soon-to-open Ivanka Trump brand store in the lobby was covered up (above), and Vanity Fair published a harsh critique of Trump Grill there, declaring it "could be the worst restaurant in America."
During presidential visits, the surrounding streets are closed to vehicular traffic and sand-filled dump trucks line the Fifth Avenue entrance.
