The Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned in strong terms the spate of blackmail ongoing in the state. The Association made this known on Friday, May 1, 2020, in a release signed by its Chairman, Rev. Ndueso Ekwere.

Rev. Ekwere who expressed displeasure at the streams of character assassination conjured by men against their fellow men lamented that blackmail “has become fashionable in our dear State and mostly on the social media platforms in recent time”.
Describing it as “very unhealthy for any society that wants to grow and prosper”, he argued further that the prevalent period of the COVID-19 pandemic was one which called for sober reflection from everyone and not a time for idle talks.

“Let me remind us that it is scriptural that every idle word that is spoken (written) shall be accounted for on the day of judgment - Matt. 12v 36”, he said.
Meanwhile, the Christian body has appreciated the christianhood for adhering to the government’s existing rules prohibiting large gatherings.
Soliciting more of the support, the CAN leader expressed appreciation to the State government and essential workers at the fore of the fight and called on the Christian community to remain in prayers for the state and country at a time like this.

“While we appreciate the challenges government is facing in this difficult time, and while we are still expecting government to relax the restrictions as it affects the church in Akwa Ibom State, I appeal to the Christian Community in the State to pray expectantly and continue to cooperate with government at this time”, the Chairman said.

He expressed optimism that the state government will in no time relax the lockdown order and “churches will be allowed to hold services and relevant weekly activities at least on NCDC and government prescribed hygienic conditions/ guidelines”.
He however called for an unwavering of hope, adding that the COVID-19 plague “will certainly pass away and that very soon”.
