Ifeanyi could remember one conversation he had with his father before his untimely death in 2007. His father was a truck driver who never really had any formal education but was bent on providing the same for his four children. He believed in hard work so much!

Ifeanyi, my dear son, hard work pays. Make sure you work very hard in school and when you eventually land a job, do everything right and be very smart on the job. That way, you will get your due promotions and benefits. Your bosses will notice you and give you all the entitlements you deserve.

Ifeanyi took those words to heart and worked hard in school. After graduating with a first-class, he got a job in his chosen field. After spending six years at the company, he was still working as junior staff. Meanwhile, all those who came in at the same time and after him had all been promoted.

He kept wondering what was wrong until one day, he overheard two of his senior colleagues talking about him.

Mr. A – I spoke to the MD earlier on a possible promotion for Ifeanyi. God knows the guy merits it.

Mr. B – What did the MD say?

Mr. A – He said he only knows that Ifeanyi is smart but he does not get along well with his colleagues. His actions show that he feels like he is smarter than everyone else, even those who came before him. Giving him more power would only intoxicate him and make him maltreat his subordinates.

Mr. B – So, does that mean he will not be promoted…

Mr. A – Your guess is as good as mine!

On hearing their conversation, Ifeanyi was dumbstruck. He never knew that was the preception his colleagues had of him.. Immediately, he started to backpedal on his attitude.

A lot of times, we think that only hard work is needed to succeed as an employee of a company or organization, However, our behaviors and attitudes count also. No matter what you think, people at your workplace are watching you and can recommend you for any growth opportunity. Do not let them down with any negative attitude.
