Wall SCREEDING Question Needs Answers Please. by tonididdy(m): 8:24am On May 05, 2020
Hi famx.

So yesterday when the lockdown was over, I wanted the 4walls of a very important room screeded.
The screed guy came with a bucket of a white chemical looking like paint and a cup of glue.

Now he said no need for cement. Guys please, anyone with expertise on SCREEDING. Are these materials complete?

Is it safe to screed without any form of cement?

I once did SCREEDING in one of my rooms from the left over materials from the POP work. The pop guys did the job, I wasn't around to see it.

Please I need answers, I don't want a bad job.
Location: benin

yes if the paint is putty
it's a mixture so you don't need addition of cement. it's thick in nature.
Check the paint if it's watery like ordinary screeding paint,if yes. Insist he adds cement and enough glue(top bond) 2-3 kg will be enough for 2 buckets of paint since it's interior screeding.

Thanks very much sir for this Swift response.
Yes the screeders confirmed the mixture is too watery, so yes they added glue and cement and now work has commenced.

Thanks again...

Hi
So I find the mixture of dangote cement and the screed paint a bit dark compared to the mix of a pop cement.
Well work is almost done, I hope a bright paint will pop its beauty well enough considering the screed surface is a bit dark lol

there is a way they can tint the mixture to get a less darker finish.
Anyway if using a quality satin or Matt paint, you don't need to worry cos it'll cover in 2 coating.
or you can use a normal white paint to prime the wall to enable the second colour catch faster.

Thank you.
Now it's dry, it's a lot brighter.
Would you like to see the finished work? smiley

lol
for interior works, it's better seen with the bare eyes cos it's difficult to spot hidden errors from pictures.
The lesser the wavy lines( hope you know what this means),the better.
cos a quality satin paint will surely expose any error done during screeding.
your eyes will tell you better bro.
All the best

I just had to resurrect this thread as you seem like a pro on this. I'm repainting an already screeded and satin-painted wall. So here is my question: is it possible to mix the screeding material with the paint of your choice so you won't need to paint afterwards? I'm thinking since the screeding color and my choice of paint color is almost same. I like slightly off-white/dirty-white.

How can you mix screeed and paint... You want waste money ni undecided

Screed goes with gum and Cement, so why would you want to put an expensive satin paint in the mix.
Looks like disaster to me.
If you say both materials have Similar colours of your choice, why not paint only .

I'm looking for a perfect smooth finish. The previous painter made a mess of the wall. Excessive roller marks/stippling.

If the old screeding and painting is in good state. Better repaint with the colour of your choice.
No need mixing it with the screeding material.
You can use a good quality off white Matt paint. Intercolor, dulux and likes.
Screeding material don't go well with silk paints.

If the previous paint used was a satin or silk paint and the marks are not pronounced. Use a strong Matt paint to recoat it twice. The first coat should dry properly before applying the second.

Depends on the smoothness, if you want something very smooth. Bruise the wall and rescreed with much top bond ie gum. It's more expensive but will give you a smooth finish if the screeding is done well.
Aside that, just use Matt paint to recoat the wall twice. It's cheaper and will cover the mess to an extent but not like the first option.

To an extent, if the wall is waterlogged screening can't prevent it.
Best to use tiles at the lower sides then screed up.

For best screening paint, it depends on your location. Just buy a good one and mix with quality bond acrylic and black cement.

Screeding is not used to treat fungi and algae, there is a surface treatment chemical for that.
Re: Wall SCREEDING Question Needs Answers Please. by MATBILL10(m): 9:06am On Jul 09, 2023
Also if the wall is waterlogged topbond or cement is not the solution. You need to treat the wall first with surface treatment materials depending on the damages before screeding with good screeding material like waterproof premix screeding putty.

I am building a property in my village. It has been plastered. The only finishing work is painting. All artisans used from foundation are native locals. I believe this will empower them and contribute to the economy of the village.

However, when I asked the painter about screeding, he was astonished and ignorant that something else will be done to already plastered wall before painting.

Please, can I get a layman breakdown of how best they can handle the screeding . Materials, ratios, timing, cost information will be greatly appreciated if added.

My decision to stick with the locals is basically for empowerment. I have used the project to teach them modern technology like polystyrene ceiling and glass window casement with burglary proof. They eventually did great jobs. I feel great doing this and I want to do more.

Kindly assist.
