Thugs disrupt Anambra market preelection meeting

People suspected to be thugs on Monday disrupted a preelection meeting of the Bridgehead drug market in Onitsha, Anambra State
It was gathered that crisis broke out following disagreement among contestants in the market's poll.

Trouble started when the President General of the market, Sunday Obinze announced that election of officers for the market must hold on Tuesday.

"Some of the traders and line secretaries were taken aback on the sudden announcement of the date of the election without any prior information to the contestants more so when market has just resumed on Monday after the five weeks lockdown over the COVID-19 pandemic.

"While some were raising objections against the sudden announcement, about 20 men suspected to be thugs invaded the meeting venue and disrupted the proceedings."

"Some of the traders were al attacked with chairs and broken bottles while others ran for safety leading to stampede in the market," a source told our correspondent.

Commenting, two chairmanship candidates in the poll, Ndubisi Chukwuleta and Ugochukwu Nwosu, said the announcement by Obinze was a sign that he was acting a script to foist an unpopular candidate on the traders.

They alleged that several actions of the electoral committee members who were also contestants in the election were all pointers that they wanted to rig the election to favour an anointed candidate.

"We call on Governor Obiano to halt the charade going on in the market over the election and ensure that a level playing ground is provided for all contestants at a later date so that the traders can freely elect their leaders without compulsion", one of them said.

President General of Amalgamated Traders Association in Anambra, Ikechukwu Ekwegbalu when contacted said the election would not hold until the right environment was created for it.
