On May 5, the Foreign Ministry spokesman Ferdinand Nwonye issued a press statement saying that Emirates Airline plans to evacuate 265 Nigerians from Dubai.

The statement said the evacuees are expected to arrive at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos at 3 pm on Wednesday, May 6.

The statement also stated that hotel accommodation in Lagos and Abuja is ready. The Port Health Service Center of Nigeria, the Civil Aviation Administration of Nigeria, the Center for Disease Control of Nigeria, the Office of the National Security Advisor, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Police have already inspected the hotel.

In addition, the statement also stated that discussions between the Office of the British High Commissioner for Nigeria and British Airways on the evacuation of 300 Nigerians from London are still ongoing. The flight (BA 9155) is expected to depart from Terminal 5 of London Heathrow Airport at 7:10 am on May 8, and arrive at Lagos at 1:10 pm that day.

The statement also stated that the evacuation from the United States is also in progress. The Ethiopian Airlines is responsible for the transportation. It is expected that the Nigerians of the United States will be evacuated from New York to Abuja on May 11th. The evacuation time is expected to be scheduled.

In early April, the federal government registered overseas Nigerians willing to return to Nigeria.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairman of the Diaspora Committee (NIDCOM), also pointed out that the costs involved will be borne by the nationals concerned.

Most of the individuals who expressed interest were those who visited the affected countries for a short period of time and were in trouble because the affected countries closed their borders.

The UAE, the United States and the United Kingdom are all the most severely affected areas of the coronavirus epidemic. A total of 15,000 cases have been diagnosed in the UAE, 1.23 million cases have been diagnosed in the United States, and 190,000 cases have been diagnosed in the United Kingdom.

The system will be under greater pressure after evacuating all people outside back to Nigeria.
