Social distancing is a practical impossibility in most urban areas in Nigeria- Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state says the social distancing policy being canvassed by the Presidential taskforce and the NCDC as part of measures to contain the spread of Coronavirus, is a ''practical impossibility'' in most urban areas in Nigeria.

Kogi and Cross Rivers are the only states with no confirmed cases of COVID19.

Speaking at a press conference this evening, Governor Bello said

''The NCDC must have noticed by now, social distancing is a practical impossibility in most urban areas in Nigeria including Kogi state. Many homes are multi-tenanted and many share same or one utility.''

Same can be said of life in much of rural Nigeria as well.

He's right about this.

How do occupants in a multi- tenanted apartment who share same bathroom, kitchen and toilet maintain physical distance?

There are no functional and organised public transport system in most cities.

Most of our markets are open stalls, not supermarkets with controlled entrance.

Knowing how our society is structured, authorities should have strived harder not to have allowed the virus in.

But now that it's here, I'll suggest we start doing things and eating foods that will boost our immunity against the contagion.
