Covid-19: Akwa Ibom Farmer Cries Out On A Strange Disease. by Nobody: 1:00pm On May 10, 2020
The sudden outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic has taught many people in different areas a great lesson on food scarcity. The main aim of everyone's hardwork is putting food on the table.
Months ago we didn't hear of this deadly virus, but things were very difficult for many household to eat at least once a day no to talk of now that this pandemic have threaten everyone to remain indoors. So many individuals are going through a dying situation while some have lost their lives because of severe hunger and depression.
That is why Farmers in a community called MBIAFUN NKWONO in Ikono LGA. of Akwa Ibom State took farming to the next level this year than ever. They have planted maize of different varieties all over their gardens and farmlands in a commercial scale so that when the time for harvest comes they will put in the market and make money, share some to the needy and use others.
But after few weeks of germination, something nasty develops. A strange Pest started damaging most or all the maize crops in some areas. These pests are compared to termite attack on a wood. They destroy the maize plants and some that survive would not yield as they supposed to. So due to this great disappointment to some affected farmers, they are so stressed and discouraged. They are desperately looking for a way out. Some farmers go around their garden picking and killing some of the pests one after another while some are applying so many things being told like; ashes. But others have spent much money buying fake pesticide from wrong marketers and when applying to their crops, instead of killing the pests, it kills the crops.
According to one farmer named; Mr Paul Essien, he said: "I started noticing this strange Pest two years ago but in a low rate and few places. This year's own is so disastrous and is affecting many farmers in the community and elsewhere."
Another farmer by name Mrs Victoria Udo said: "Who esle have recalled that some years ago, we lost a variety of Cocoyam called in Ibibio language 'IKPONG ASOBO' by a certain disease."
The farmers in general have practiced Crop Rotation, Bush Fallowing, and even Mixed Cropping. But still, their attack is increasing year by year.
Some people have suggested that the cause of the Pest depends on where the maize seeds were preserved. While others think is climatic factor. What ever the case may be, please we request the production of suitable pesticide for the Pest control. We love our farming job and we will continue to contribute to the supply of food crops in our Society.
