Coronavirus Pandemic (covid-19): The Virus That Humbled The World by ufpeace(m): 12:23am On May 11, 2020
The coronavirus pandemic which has humbled the whole since it started has been called so many names ranging from covid-19, the Wuhan virus, the Chinese virus, rona virus and in some places in Africa “the richman’s virus”.

The pandemic has sparked a lot of conspiracy theories as regards the origin, its spread and the search for a cure since its discovery. This article will help to enlighten you more on the following:

The Origin

The Countries Affected

The Race for a cure

The Effect of the pandemic of different Economies

Any Hope for the future?

CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC: THE ORIGIN
This particular subject has brought a lot of attention with many persons trying to prove it started in china or those trying to prove that it started from the USA. The only known and proven fact about the origins of covid-19 is that it started in late December 2019 in a seafood wholesale wetmarket, the Huanan seafood wholesale market in Wuhan, Hubei, China.

An article from the Journals lWW of the chinese medical association further buttressed this point

In late December 2019, a previous unidentified coronavirus, currently named as the 2019 novel coronavirus#, emerged from Wuhan, China, and resulted in a formidable outbreak in many cities in China and expanded globally, including Thailand, Republic of Korea, Japan, United States, Philippines, Viet Nam, and our country (as of 2/6/2020 at least 25 countries). The disease is officially named as Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19, by WHO on February 11, 2020). It is also named as Severe Pneumonia with Novel Pathogens on January 15, 2019 by the Taiwan CDC, the Ministry of Health and is a notifiable communicable disease of the fifth category. COVID-19 is a potential zoonotic disease with low to moderate (estimated 2%–5%) mortality rate. Person-to-person transmission may occur through droplet or contact transmission and if there is a lack of stringent infection control or if no proper personal protective equipment available, it may jeopardize the first-line healthcare workers.

Futhermore, the Science Direct journal of advanced research, in their abstract said that

The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is a highly transmittable and pathogenic viral infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which emerged in Wuhan, China and spread around the world. Genomic analysis revealed that SARS-CoV-2 is phylogenetically related to severe acute respiratory syndrome-like (SARS-like) bat viruses, therefore bats could be the possible primary reservoir.

THE COUNTRIES AFFECTED
As at 6th may 2020, 212 countries and territories around the world have reported a total of 3,777,569 confirmed cases of the coronavirus pandemic since it started in december according to the worldometer.info. The death toll of the pandemic stands at 261,205 deaths and an inconclusive number of recoveries but it stands at about 1million.

Most of the countries affected, responded different than others. Example of countries that responded and tested faster are south korea, new zeland and a handful of other countries.

CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC: THE SEARCH FOR A CURE

There is no clinically approved antiviral drug or vaccine available to be used against COVID-19. However, few broad-spectrum antiviral drugs have been evaluated against COVID-19 in clinical trials, resulted in clinical recovery.

A lot of countries like china, USA, UK, Sweden and so on have been conducting some clinical trials while other countries like madagascar have taken a more herbal and traditional approach.

THE EFFECT OF THE PANDEMIC ON WORLD ECONOMIES
One of the most evident and direct effects of covid-19 is the breakdown of world economy’s due to neccessary lockdowns and curfews impose by different countries. This lockdown has affected a lot of businesses and even though some businesses are trying to adapt by taking their’s online, it has created a pardigm shift into the way people use some goods. Businesses like airlines have let go of some of their staff since most of them are not working , while others took a paycut.

Some countries like the USA and canada have approved billions of dollars worth of emergency funding for businesses, while other countries like the UK decided to support businesses so as to keep their workers and avoid an unemployment spike.

Sectors like sports have all put their seasons, tournaments and competitions on hold , while some football leagues like the French ligue 1 Season Ends Due To Coronavirus and the dutch league have all ended their season abruptly without completing them.

The wall street and a whole bunch of other companies experienced a massive plunge in their stocks since the coronavirus pandemic started. Oil producing countries like Nigeria have taken a turn for the worse as oil hit its lowest since it first sold and has been struggling to recover. These also led to the United nations predicting an increase in global hunger and with the virus still spreading it will take a while for us to get back to life as we knew it.

ANY HOPE FOR THE FUTURE?
The pandemic has changed the world as we know it and even though it may seem that more bad things are still happening like the global hunger crisis, high unemployment rates, locust infestation in east Africa, muder hornest in the US and a metoer that nearly hit earth; one thing still stands out and that is humans ability to bounce back.

This bounce back ability is seen in the way people are trying to get creative with the lockdown and also how some rich persons are helping in contributing money to the research and cure for the coronavirus pandemic.

As we stay at home during this lockdown lets always remember that the virus only moves if we move and to wear a mask whenever we are going out.

Thanks for taking your time to read and don’t forget to comment your thoughts on this post. Either way I will love to hear from you.
