Ibadan And The Yoruba Civil War. by lawani: 11:25am On May 23, 2020
Prior to 1877 when the civil war broke out, Ibadan stood astride the Yoruba country like a collusus in the words of a historian. The 1877 to 1893 civil war was fought to break the hold of Ibadan. The Japanese fought their own civil war for as long as the Yoruba and someone was declared emperor at the end. The rebellion was led by Ogedengbe Agbogungboro of Ijesa and Fabunmi okemesi of ekiti. It was a serious blow to Yoruba unity. The Fulani supported the rebels and a Fulani princess was given to the owa obokun Bepo to marry, who gave birth to the owa obokun, oba Aromolaran of Ijesa who ruled in the forties. The present owa obokun, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran is his son. The Ibadan was a successor of the Oyo empire and they portrayed themselves to their vassals as servants of the Alaafin, though they were hardly making any returns to the Alaafin. The Ibadans used natives as ajeles and for decades were able to hold the whole of Yoruba land together as one before the kiriji rebellion which ended in the colonisation of Yoruba land and by extension Nigeria by Great Britain. Aare ona kakanfo Latosisa who was leader of the federal forces died at the war front in Igbajo, of old age. He died a Yoruba nationalist and hero. Kudos must be given to Ibadan in retrospect, for doing their bit for Yoruba unity. The present Yoruba must pick up the gauntlet and continue from where people like Aare Latosisa stopped in the 19th century. May God help us.

I am Ijesa myself but I support the Yoruba nationalism of Aare Latosisa with hindsight.
