My fellow Nairalander, I greet you o...

my family and I decided to speak about our future plans today o(mum and elder brother). My people already know that I don’t wanna stay in this country after I graduate.

The good thing is they are willing to let me go but at the same time, they are discouraging me from going.

Here are the reasons for thier discouragement

1) there is no job there: well, my dad happened to school in the uk so he use to Tell us about his own experience how he hustled to get just ordinary student job. Although after his studies he cameback to Nigeria to start his career in Civil engineering.
He also said that immediately you graduate from the Sch that it would be difficult to get job there

2) High standard of living: They said that the UK is really expensive. The brought up the idea of rent, water, electricity bill, tax etc sha

3) Nigeria is my fatherland: angry grin angry this one cracked me up cos they always insist that why are people running away from Nigeria that Nigeria is actually good blah blah...... recently I heard on the phone when my dad was telling my mum in Yoruba that “ omo this Nigeria has spoilt finally” yet you still want me to stay grin grin clowns

This are the major reason they stated

Now my point is that I cannot even stay here because my 2 core strength is in Computer network security and Sports and we are very weak in this aspect in Nigeria

I remembered doing my IT in ministry of sci and technology, alausa and it got to a point I was wondering WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE HERE. I was paid #2000 per month as an IT student grin grin .

My elder brother says he doesn’t want to leave naija cos of his area of study is quite relevant here in Nigeria (civil engineering) I agree with him tho but ....

My people, if you were in my shoes would you JAPA? I need you guys advise

But me sha I have weighed my options and made my decision... I will japa... regardless what they tell me

The also said that it’s people who haven’t travelled outside to the western world that are insisting that dey want to leave Nigeria without knowing how life is over there

My brother except you lack the wherewithal for such. If your family cannot actively restrain you by maybe withholding financial assistance, but can only verbally 'discourage' you and you still are considering whether to go or stay, you're on a long thing.

You better leave while you still can.

Disclaimer---Ignore this if your family is extremely well to do.

Get a work permit first and then make this thread again? It's not as if you could work into the embassy and get a visa immediately.

It's not discouragement, son. It's cost.

grin the only way you’d get a good job in the U.K. is if you really have something to offer them. But from what you’ve posted above, you don’t really have anything to offer them apart from taking their money which they won’t want you to do. But I don’t think they’re forcing you to stay in Nigeria. They’re just telling you that the life over there isn’t the way the media portrays it

What do you want for yourself and what is the plan ? It seems like a simple enough question but it is really important. I find if you have no idea what you want to do it becomes easier for people to push you about. Your dad is right it was really difficult during his time but we have since made progress , an MSc in the UK would get you a post study visa , it's valid for 2 years which gives you the opportunity to get a job and some experience. Note that it is not a walk in the park to get a job o and as someone said here you could end up being a security guard after your Masters. I remember a friend of mine making fun of me when I got my first office job in the UK , he was making more than me in the care sector . I stopped talking to him , in a few years I was making in 1 day what he was making in a month , he is still in the care sector ( no disrespect to care workers or security guards ). Maybe I just got lucky , you could be lucky too but you will work for it o.

Networking is a not a bad career path , use your time in Naija to get certified and learn as much as possible , if that 2k a month job gives you the right experience please go for it .

In summary please have a plan , do your research and put your work where your mind is

Same people that will be the ones that will be asking you to send pounds when you get there. Sometimes, even your immediate family could be the ones trying to hinder you. My advice: travel there or wherever you want to go no matter what people say. You'll live your life being grateful for this decision you'll make.

I guess you mean high COST of living. High standard of living isn't a problem but high cost of living.
The cost if living in the UK is quite high but you can live well if you have a decent job and watch your expenses.

This is your choice to make and anyone can give you million reasons why you should put shouldn't. Think through all they have said and your own goal and make your decision. The success it otherwise of your decision is your cross to bare.
