GRE is an entrance exam through which UG students from all over the globe can apply to MS programs in the US (& a couple of institutes in Singapore).
It is just a filtering method that tests you in three major areas - Quantative Aptitude, Verbal Aptitude and Analytical Reading/Writing skills.
Clearing the GRE does not guarantee you a place in any university if it is not accompanied with a stellar resumé. Meaning, you will need to participate in worthwhile extracurricular as well as co curricular activities. Also, if you have written a paper on some topic and got it published in some international journal then the selection process becomes much easier for you.
