Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, in this interview with TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI, speaks latest developments in the state ahead of the September 19 governorship election in the state. Excerpts:

There are reports of a crack in Governor Obaseki's camp following the resignation of his Commissioner for Information, Paul Ohonbamu. Is it true that the governor's loyalists are now deserting him?

Rather than deplete, the governor’s camp is swelling by the day. There is no crack what­soever in our camp. We are very intact; very firm and focused on our political process. On the resignation of Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, I want to say that to the best of my knowledge, he has shown that his resignation does not have to do with pol­itics or dissatisfaction with the government. He was on live television on Saturday in Indepen­dent Television, a local television in Benin City and he stated unequivo­cally that his support for the governor is 100 per­cent and he will contin­ue to use every medium available to canvass the superiority of Governor Obaseki over any other aspirant who are vying for the position in Edo state. He also boldly said that he cannot have any­thing to do with any oth­er aspirant. We believe that what he has said on air is valid and true and we wish him well in his future endeavours.

The governor has also been dragged to court on allegation of certificate forgery. How will you respond to that?

The University of Ibadan is not an institu­tion that is known, not just in Nigeria but across the world. That is the university the governor attended. To claim that the certificate that the governor received from that institution is not genuine is not just laugh­able but baseless. If they are in doubt, whatever verification they want to make can be done in the University of Ibadan. We know this will not fly. This same matter which they have raised now was the same matter that was raised by the PDP in 2016 when the governor was also running for this same position and the same processes were instituted by these same individuals who are now parading themselves as APC members. What they just did now was to go to the archives and dust up the falsehood they tried to propagate at that time which failed miserably and will also fail this time because there is no truth in it.

The University of Ibadan 2018 Alumni lec­ture was delivered by the governor; which means that he must have gone to that university and graduated before you can deliver such lecture. Let me add that it is only dis­tinguished ones among them who attended that university that can be given that opportunity. If Governor Obaseki did not attend that universi­ty and come out in flying colours with his certifi­cates intact, will he be given that opportunity to deliver that lecture? So, it is a rubbish suit and once it gets before the court, it will fall like a pack of cards.

What is the state government doing to ensure a violent-free primary exercise?

We have received a lot of intelligence that Ize-Iyamu and other people who are representing Adams Oshiomhole in Edo state are procuring arms and ammunitions, and they are importing thugs from parts of the Niger Delta with the view to cause mayhem in Edo state and make it im­possible for the govern­ment to enforce the regu­lations on the movement of people with respect to the spread of COVID-19. I’m sure you are aware that the state govern­ment has made a law that prevents political gather­ings that can endanger the lives of people with respect to the spread of Coronavirus. On their part, they feel that law will prevent them from having their way in the primaries on June 22nd. To that extent, they have now gone to states with­in the Niger Delta, espe­cially from Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa to import thugs and bring them to different locations with­in the state, with arms and ammunitions in or­der to unleash mayhem on the state. Their pri­mary mission is to make impossible for the state to enforce that law.

We have passed this information to the Com­missioner of Police and all other security agen­cies in the state so that this sinister and danger­ous plan does not come to pass. We are resolved as a state to ensure that they do not succeed in their evil plans. We have our eyes on them and we are watching them. By the grace of God, that day will come and we will enforce that law and make sure they are unable to cause crisis in the state.

Obaseki should concentrate on overcoming the hurdles of the party primaries that is close at hand
