More than 100 schools and daycare centers have been closed again in Israel (about 3 weeks after they reopened) due to a spike in COVID-19 cases in the country. According to the Times of Isreal, about 330 teachers and students have also tested positive for the novel coronavirus since schools reopened, with thousands more in quarantine.

The Gymnasia Rehavia high school in Jerusalem is said to have been the worst hit by the pandemic with 160 of its students and staff reported to have contracted the virus. Israel had reopened schools on May 17 — after two months of lockdown — as part of efforts to ease the severe measures earlier introduced to combat spread of the killer virus.

But the development seemed to have brought a setback to the country’s success against the virus with surge in new confirmed cases. As of Sunday, the country has recorded 17,863 cases of the virus and 298 deaths, according to worldometers.

The development had made the country’s government to rethink the earlier decision to open schools. The country’s education ministry has also reportedly informed school administrators that upcoming graduation ceremonies will have to take place in a more limited fashion.
