Following the disqualification of Edo state Governor, Godwin Obaseki from contesting at the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary election, Obaseki has released a press statement through his spokesman, Crusoe Osagie, that he will not contest the decision of the committee which he tagged to be ‘a mockery of the democratic process’.

Unconfirmed reports have however stated that he has defected his allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and collected a membership card at Ward 4, Oredo Local Government. It was also alleged that all 18 local government chairmen of the state and 12 lawmakers are joining him in the switch to the PDP.

Attempts to confirm this report led to an interview of the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Olagbodiyan who stated that the national secretariat has not received any information from the ward stating the switch. He added that joining the party has procedures and processes which guides their actions in such cases, also stating that the party is open to anyone willing to join as its system is Open, transparent, Free and Just.

Edo state PDP Party Chairman, Hon. Tony Aziegbemi has also stated that the governor has not contacted the party about any intention of switching to the party and like Olagbodiyan extended an open arm to the possibility.

Obaseki’s current predicament is presumably linked to his fallout with the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, since it was under the APC flag that he was screened and cleared for the governorship election that brought him into his current political position of edo state governor.
