Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, has asked Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo state, to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in his reelection bid, TheCable can report.

TheCable understands that Atiku contacted Obaseki on Friday after he was disqualified from participating in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the September 19 governorship election in Edo state.

The former vice-president, who was the PDP candidate in the last presidential election, is also making way for “soft landing” for Obaseki should he defect to the party which is the main opposition in Edo.

Although the PDP constitution requires any member of the party seeking elective position under its platform to at least be registered for 18 months, it gives room for a waiver.

A source close to Atiku told TheCable that the former presidential candidate discussed Obaseki’s likely defection with some governors in the PDP.

“The Waziri (of Adamawa Emirate which Abubakar was turbaned in 2018) is wooing Obaseki on behalf of PDP. He spoke with him yesterday and encouraged him to join the PDP,” the source said.

“He also spoke to some of the PDP governors and urged them to give him a soft landing and access to the party.”

Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki’s spokesman, did not immediately respond to enquiries on the issue when he was contacted on Saturday.

Jonathan Ayuba, chairman of the APC screening committee for the Edo governorship poll, had said the panel disqualified Obaseki over a “defective” certificate.

TheCable had reported that the PDP is likely the governor’s next stop as the party had been waiting in the wings for the APC crisis to boil over so that it can provide a platform for Obaseki.

He had been at loggerheads with Adams Oshiomhole, the national chairman of APC who supported him in 2016.

Oshiomhole is believed to be backing Osagie Ize-Iyamu who has been named the consensus candidate of one of the APC factions in Edo.

Nigerian politicians are all the same. They join political party simply to use it as a vehicle to power and not because they are convinced about the ideologies and programs of the party.

Anyway, it’s good riddance to bad rubbish. He should go and continue with his wicked and heartless behavior in PDP.

That's an atikulated advice!

However, politics is weighing your options because it involves "give and take" transaction.

First, PDP will weigh their options vis-a-vis the certificate irregularities before committing.

Second, giving Gov. Obaseki automatic ticket means that PDP leadership will have to jettison some members who have bought forms and are currently gearing up for primaries. Therefore, they can't admit him without giving him a deputy and reserve the absolute right to appoint key members as influential commissioners. In short, given his rebellious nature, he will be so encircled that he will be suffocating.

Atiku looking for allies for his 2023 not so secret ambition.

Anyways, three years is such a long time in politics for a lot to change.

I have a question for PDP members though

Where will the likes of Wike, kwakwanso, Tambual fit in scheme of things come 2023?

Esseite:
Regions differ, Obaseki might just pull an ortom..
Ortom had the advantage of a general election that enabled him overcome APC in Benue, he also defected early.

Obaseki would have to face APC alone and there is good chance those that claim they are with him are double agents.

By this one would wonder what the PDP hopes to achieve seeing that the embattled governor's disqualification was on grounds of discrepancies in his academic certificates. And to avoid the scenarios leading to the APC losing Bayelsa state. Let just watch out keeping close tabs as events continue to unfolds.

Obaseki in serious deep thoughts right now ....to be or not to be...If he joins PDP and win, that will be very good for him...But, if he joins PDP and lose..ha...he will go on exile for years, various litigations await him.

Not so good time to be in Obaseki's shoes

I wish Nigeria politics had value. I'm confused if we really copied this democratic system from Western nations or if Nigeria is using the fake or doctored version. How does a politician jump about from one political party to the other without a careful appraisal of his political philosophy? And another one without a political philosophy is wooing him? Must he contest? Are there no other men of integrity to lead Edo apart from those from APC or PDP? Atiku should know that a man with the determination of obaseki doesn't need to be appealed to, in order to make a decision. In the real sense, he is the one who needs a political platform more than a political party needing him. If a political party is begging him, it therefore means that they have no prestige in them, and don't consider themselves contenders for an election if Obaseki doesn't use their platform, and that in itself is a shame

Anyway, there was a thread earlier about what to do different if i become Naija president. This was my response.


First of, i will announce on inaugural that every person with Nigeria's wealth is free to have it but they can do well by investing it massively in Nigeria. Any other corrupt practice hence attracts death penalty

Second is to cut every proceeds of oil.... every proceeds of oil after the 13% has been given back to the state must go into Health and Educational sector, for three years.

Third, i will organize people to make genuine Reform of the Constitution. How?

They would be drawn from all walks of life, from the last man on the street to the professor in our schools.
A. Every Ethinic group must come up with a document that shows their aspirations, collective goals.
B. Every group must conduct a free and fair election that would produce people to fill the constitution reform forum.

After all this... then we can change our own curriculum to that that suits the documents tendered by the Ethinic groups.

Then after 3 years of all. Every part of Nigeria that feels like leaving are free to. After which True federalism will be in place. Every state should keep its resources.

Then how will Fg fare.... Every state must pay 20% derivatives back to the federation account.

We only need the senate that must consists of 5 people each from every state. (Constitution reform will enhance this).

What do i even know?

What difference does it make if he joins PDP or CAC or EFCC. He’s still the same Obaseki.

The same Atiku might join APC tomorrow. Them dey use our head but behind doors laughing and sharing money.

Atiku betrayed Obasanjo and tried to impeach him, same thing Obaseki did, Atiku destroyed PDP because of Jonathan same thing Obaseki tried to do with APC with NGF vs APC NWC

PDP would act on greed and not common sense and give Obaseki ticket since he would give them little cash just as Atiku bought them over, and Edo PDP people would work for APC out of hate and loyalty to Ize Iyamu their former flag bearer
