WHERE STRENGTH LIES TO FACE ISLAMIC MILITANCY

The two main religions that Africans claim are Christianity and Islam. In Africa we find that acts of terrorism are done in the name of “Allah” so the source is clear. News reports inform us that Africa is facing Islamic militancy in the Sahel, in the Horn, in the Western, and in the Eastern regions.

Islam is a religion that tells its adherents that killing those who do not believe in that religion is a good thing which will get rewarded. Judaism is not like that. Buddhism is not like that. Shinto is not like that. Hinduism is not like that. Atheism is not like that. Christianity is not like that.

So what should be the Christian response to militant deadly Islam?

We must pray to God. But we know from Scripture that praying is not enough. We know from Joshua and Deuteronomy that the people of God had to continually fight their enemies before they could claim the promised land. Then, Chronicles and Kings narrate how there were continuous wars in order to secure and keep the promised land. Israel did not just pray at home and in the Temple then go to bed and wait for “God will do it”, they themselves also had to train then go to fight battles and wars.

1. So as the people of God today, we too cannot hide away in church or “prayers” and expect that this will save our land and our children from advancing militant Islam. Pretence and deceiving ourselves is just that and the consequences will be defeat, because God is not obliged to help the lazy and the hypocrite. Rather, we are ALSO to fight to save our lives. Self-defence is a God-given duty against those who without provocation want to kill and destroy. We are to be involved in neighbourhood watch schemes, creating them if there are none in our area. We are to get involved in social action through rallies, demonstrations, protests, etc and online petitions. Plus use social media to raise awareness and support just causes.

We also know from Joshua, Deuteronomy, Kings and Chronicles that God punishes hypocrisy and disobedience. God punishes the individual, that person’s family, plus that person’s nation. Thus God punishes COLLECTIVELY! We can recap by reading about Achan in Joshua chapter 7. Briefly, God made it clear that after attacking Jericho the Israelites were to destroy everything and take nothing as spoil. Achan decided to steal some gold, silver and an outfit. Afterwards, when the Israelites went to battle against Ai they lost and several men were killed – all because of Achan’s sin. In the end, Achan was found out. He and his entire family were killed, plus his possessions destroyed.

2. So as the people of God today, just one person’s sin will affect that person’s entire family plus also their church. That would mean defeat by our enemies like the Israelites were defeated at Ai. In many parts of Africa, especially in Nigeria we see Islamic terrorists and Islamic militia herdsmen continuously killing Christians then grabbing their lands and properties.

So African Christian, what will we do? Will we put away our sin, repent then make restitution? And be so grateful to God that He is still merciful towards us to allow us to see our sin, then deal properly with it?
Or, do we carry on as usual with our corruptions that Africans are known for, sing, shout and make noise in church, then foolishly expect that we and our children will have “blessed” lives?

The Bible is our safety and our guide. We simply cannot mock God with our continued wrongdoing and corruption. Rather, we are mocking our own selves, and unfortunately our own children too who will bear the consequences. “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap”. (Galatians 6:7).

Militant Islam is here. So what is stopping us from repenting? Is it pride? Is it waiting for another to repent first? Oh foolish Africans!

Did Jesus Christ make separate rules for Christians in Africa?

What Christians in Africa ought to ask themselves more often than not is "what did Christ command as far as enemies are concerned?" Then do that which He commands. Wearing the batch that says "Christian" means nothing in the end if we are unable to what is commanded of us, no matter how painful.
