Not quite different from selling in the market or at expensive time.
Will rather advise you to do the contract farming and sign MOU with a milling factory to mill it for you while you sell than to saddle yourself with the stress of owning a mill.

Do you mind to share some more details of the MoU? The information will come handy for some of us who may want to go into contract farming in the future.

How do you ensure that the farmers do not steal (ground seeds, chemicals, fertilizer etc) from you during the planting season right up to the harvest time?

What will the farmers gain at the end? Do you pay them? If yes, at what intervals and how much?

Do you plans put in place to transport your produce during harvest to the processing center?

Do you plan to visit the farms during the planting season?

Good thinking.

Unfortunately so many persons are only after profit without minding the health implications to the society.

I only blame our institutions for not regulating the market.

Yes sir, that is true but i can't do that.
It is penny wise, pounds foolish.

I don't cultivate or have have any affiliations with any GMO organisation at all for the records, but let's face reality, do you think the broilers and layers our poultry farmers are cultivating have not had their genes modified, a lot of the medical innovations you enjoy today are dependent on gene modification. Most of this crops and animals that are exceedingly high yielding or with characteristics beyond natural capacity are sometimes gene modified organisms. GMO's are bad, but there are loads of far worse activities and practices our farmers engage on a daily basis just for the sake of profit making.
By the way, I really do hope endeavour of your works out well, as it will empower others to exploit the world of contract farming.

Thanks very much for your contribution.
Contract farming has been on for long just that the awareness is not there.
Even here in Ogun state, a lot of farmers are declaring their interest in it and am giving one a trial next month at Odeda.
God help us all.

Good evening my fellow Farmlanders.

I am in a groundnut contract farming with a group of farmers at Niger state.

They are to do a trial groundnut contract farming for me this year and if everything goes as planned, we increase the hectares next planting season.

Groundnut specie planted - Samnut 24. 90 days farming period.

What is the total hectares that you started with now?

How do you ensure that they will sell all their yield to you at harvest?

Presently 20 hectares.
We had a contract signed that i will be offtaking all at a particular price.
Measures put in place to avoid crop diverting - I hired a local supervisor who goes there at least 2/3 times weekly for supervision and update of the project and he sends the pictures taken to me on whatsapp.
My partner also will be going there from kaduna regularly, maybe twice a month.
Also, once a month, i will send my manager down there for another round of inspection and i may also go personally if chanced.
Contract farming is good but from my little experience, it is better if done within your state or neighboring state for your personal weekly inspection aside supervisor.
Also, it is more advisable to be done in cluster - that is a big farm land divided among the farmers than to be done by individual farmers where the supervisor will have to be running from one farm location to another for inspection.

Nice concept

Few questions please,

1) When did you plant the seeds?
2) What yield are you looking at? Please be kind enough to give a feedback after the harvest
3) What gives you the comfort that the risks enumerated here will not crystallize in your location of contract farming?
4) When is rainfall fully established in Ogun State and Northern Niger State?

Please pardon my questions. I'm only being curious. I feel that the latitude of Ogun State from the coast is much lower and thus enjoy extended months of rains than that of Niger State and with careful planning you can crop peanuts twice in Ogun State in a season thereby leveraging on the first land preparations while running the second cycle of planting aside from savings in logistics and overall supervisory cost

Thanks

emmaodet:
I had to reduce my company capital exposure to risk by engaging in a contract farming with the farmers.
I don't need to worry about owning a land, workers theft, erratic rainfall, fulani herdsmen etc.
i only gave them improved seedlings with chemicals to offtake at 60% market price at the time of harvest.

1) When did you plant the seeds?
Planted on 18-june-2020

2) What yield are you looking at?
Expected yield is 2 tons of shelled groundnuts per hectare minimum.

3) What gives you the comfort that the risks enumerated here will not crystallize in your location of contract farming?
Pls can you shed more light on this? your English big small sir for me.

4) When is rainfall fully established in Ogun State and Northern Niger State?
Ogun state normally is from march to September and niger is june to September.
You can have 2 farming season per year in Ogun for a 3 months duration crop while 1 farming season in niger.
Yes, you are right about planting groundnuts twice a year in Ogun. Am doing that presently. Planted first groundnuts in May at Abeokuta and planting the second one in july at odeda

You see, your business model is similar to cbn anchor borrower scheme. There was a number of delinquent loans from the newspapers report wherein farmers will just elope with the produce even when they are members of co-operatives So I'm wondering how you are going to prevent this

From what you have stated, what you have is the mou which can be a strong legal instrument if it can easily be enforced or a paper if the cost of enforcement is high

I just felt that instead of going that far to do contract farming, you can do the contract farming in locations around you except there are some compelling reasons to go to that location

Thanks

Thanks bro for your contribution.
My partner stays at kaduna and will be an on-scene manager for the project.
I also thought about the distance but i did it because the north specializes more on groundnuts than south and i don't want to take chances. Also, i do buy most of my groundnuts from niger state.
But am already putting a lot of things into plan to do the contract farming with farmers in my state for proper monitoring next year.
Also, am bringing in a stripping machine to quickly separate the groundnuts from it's leaves after harvesting and this will be a welcome idea by the farmers because plucking manually by hand is not only tedious but time consuming.
So since i will be the one to do the harvesting with the stripper, i will know the weight of the groundnuts and pay them their money.

Sir emmaodet

First time venturing into farming, gave it a trial on a half plot land.

I want to know if it's a right practice to spray herbicides on a mouth old groundnut farm instead of using hand and hoe to get rid of weeds which is very stressful and time comsuming.

Bro, normally you have to spray contact/selective herbicide a day after planting the groundnut after which you weed once 4/6 weeks after planting and that is all.
It is not advisable to spray herbicides anymore after a month bro.

Hi, what's the update so far, how much have the plants grown?

Good morning bro.
Have really been busy since i got home, sorry for the late reply.

I faced a lot of challenges with the groundnuts in niger due to many factors -
Seed company manipulation and short-changing - i ordered for samnut 23 (kampala) but was supplied samnut 24. Delivery time was far beyond agreed time. I told them to deliver last of may but received supply june 20th. Quantity ordered was not delivered. Gave me 60% while they claimed 100%.

For herbicides - i ordered for 20L of gramazone (contact herbicide) and 13L of butachlor(selective herbicide) but was supplied only 24L of Paraeforce (though, still contact herbicide).

Hi, what's the update so far, how much have the plants grown?

All in all, after 1st planting 24th of june,we had a very bad/poor germination rate. Just about 10% of the seeds germinated and it was a disaster.
After investigation, i came up with 2 possibilities for that.

1. A week drought after planting the seeds - though, this shouldn't be a problem since i planted drought-resistant seed. A drought-resistant seed should be able to withstand drought after planting for atleast a month before spoiling.

2. Chemical application/seed planting - Butaforce which is a selective herbicide was applied 2 days after planting the seed. It is a selective herbicide because it spares the groundnut seeds planted but selects weeds to kill. From information gathered, was told to have planted the groundnut a week after spray the chemical by which it won't have effects on the seeds anymore.

You field looks good!

1.What did you use to plough the field - Manual or mechanical - Tractors or oxen?

2. The plants looks too close, what spacing did you use?
