The increasing rate of gender based violence, rape and sexual assault have been described as an unacceptable behavior which have no place in our society by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Speaking at a virtual meeting with the National Human Rights Commission, on Friday, Prof. Osinbajo said the Federal Government "will continue to use the platform of the National Economic Council to encourage States who are yet to domesticate the Violence Against Person's Prohibition Act of 2015 and the Child Rights Act of 2003 to do so." Speaking at a virtual meeting with the National Human Rights Commission, on Friday, Prof. Osinbajo said the Federal Government "will continue to use the platform of the National Economic Council to encourage States who are yet to domesticate the Violence Against Person's Prohibition Act of 2015 and the Child Rights Act of 2003 to do so." Osinbajo while describing the assaults as an "unacceptable behaviour and a blemish on our collective humanity and dignity as a people and as a nation", affirmed that "gender based violence, rape and sexual assault have no place I'm our society". It could be recalled that protests have been staged in various states across the country over the rape and murder of females across the nation. In a series of tweets via his official Twitter handle, the VP added: "Had the opportunity to discuss rape and gender based violence with the National Human Rights Commission at a virtual meeting today. We will continue to work with all actors to detect and punish the perpetrators of these sickening acts and work even harder to prevent their occurrence." The Nigerian police had on Monday confirmed 717 rape cases recorded between January and May.

What's the reason for the sudden increase in rape case this 2020? Is it the lockdown, or the increase in unemployment due to Covid19? The bible rightly said an idle mind is the devils workshop! |

Rape is a real issue but most Nigerians ignore it just like how they ignore pedophilia and domestic violence. The only time rape cases are mostly addressed is if the men are considered poor or not of high status cause most of y'all ignore celebrities who are accused of rape. |

Well said VP and, Government should put stiffer policy that will be subjected to rapists, child/human and people that harass fellow human beings because these people are not worthy to be in our midst. There is also need to inculcate into the schools curriculum on how to safeguard both the genders because if we are always talking about how to protect the girl gender only, we might be moving two step forward and 10 steps backward. We must balance both side for effective outcome. |

Rape shouldn't be tolerated in every sane society and government has spoken up on the matter. We need to play our parts to ensure that we report cases in our immediate environment. |
