Now that Obiano has 22 months to go.

How time flies? In the next 22 months, the incumbent governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano will serve out his constitutional two tenures and can never aspire again to become the governor of Anambra State in life by law.

Obiano was first sworn in as the governor of Anambra State on March 17, 2014. The venue of his swearing in was the late Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka the Anambra State capital.

Before 10am that day, the place had filled to capacity to welcome the new man who would decide the fate of men, women, children and even spirits of the state for four years, in the first instance.

Obiano was accompanied to the square by his predecessor, Mr Peter Obi. The March atmosphere was soothing for the day's function, the first of its kind since the creation of the state in 1991.

Even starting from the reign of Chief Jim Nwobodo in the old Anambra State which was created in 1976, no governor of the state had ever handed over to a successor, owing to acrimony and political incompatibilities.

Obi was the first to perform that ritual happily and successfully. Thus, Obiano became the governor of the state on March 17,2014 with pomp and circumstance.

From that day to his reelection in 2017, Obiano has ruled the state to the best of his ability. He added value on what he inherited.

Security and welfare of the people , especially that of state workers, were top in his agenda. He created pillars and enablers that guided his administration. The face of Awka, the state capital was given a facelift with three flyovers adorning it simultaneously in his first tenure

In 2017, Obiano sought for reelection and won overwhelmingly in what is today known as 21 over 21. What that simply means is that he scored electable votes in the 21 local government areas of the state, first of its kind.

Even the opposition parties in the state worked for his reelection and he was sworn in on 17th March, 2018. By March17, 2022, Obiano would have served the state for 96 uninterrupted months in two tenures .

Out of the 96 months, Obiano has only 22 months to say goodbye to Anambra as its governor and that will be on March17, 2022. What a figure, 22 more months terminating in 2022.

Say it anywhere, Obiano has stamped his feet firmly in the sands of time of Anambra history. Nothing can erase his name and roles in Anambra State, whether he has performed optimally or not is for posterity to judge.

The focus now is on who will succeed him. The that person who will drive the affairs of the state for 48 months or 96 months as the case may be. Who will that be?

Some names have come up in answer to the question. They include Senator Uche Ekwunife, Prof Charles Soludo, Dr Obiora Okonkwo, Dr Val Ozigbo, Dr Godwin Maduka, Chief Godwin Ezeemo, Dr Elo Aforka. Many more are still strategising for the plum job.

The next governorship election in the state is expected to hold in November, 2021.
