Fruits are important for food and good health.

But these fruits are gotten from seedlings or stem cuttings that become trees.

It is therefore important that you get the best seedlings to have a good chance of having a highly producing fruit trees.

These are some of the characteristics of a good seedling

1. The seedlings should be hybrids, they should be improved variety that will produce good yields.

2. They should be early maturing, that is the ability to mature and start fruiting between 1- 2 years.

3. Their height should be between 3- 4m (dwarf to medium height). This will enable easy management and fruit harvesting

4. They should be able to withstand stress, disease and pest attack to a great limit.

Why Rainy Season is the best time for orchard establishment

With the approach of the rainy season, agriculture and farming activities are expected to fully commence.

This presents a good opportunity to build an investment in orchard and garden farming.

Apple as a tree plant needs water for optimum growth and production. The rainy season therefore offers farmers the opportunity to establish their orchards during this year growing season.

The rains eliminate the need for irrigation, mulching and other water conservation practice. it's also help the plants to grow its roots and hence the plant size.

The rains also dissolve nutrients like fertilizer and manure that makes uptake easy for plants resulting in increased growth and development of the plants.

this season also induces fruit development and flowering in some fruit trees, this makes some fruit to be available to be eaten.

It can be conclusively said that the rainy season is the best time to establish your fruit orchard and to carrying out transplant of tree from the nursery to the field.

Talk to us for your hybrid fruit trees seedling that are ready for transplant and will start producing my this time next year (March 2022)

We have Apple, Strawberry, Fig, Grapevine, Date palm, passion fruit, Avocado, Cedar apple, mango, orange, Guava, etc

Building a Profitable Orchard

As the rainy season commence across the country. Agricultural activities are beginning to shift into full gear.

From purchase of farm inputs like improved seeds, fertilizer, herbicide and pesticide etc, farmers and investors are getting ready to make the best use of the season.

Now is the time to look into the sector to see an area where you can invest in.

Orchard which is the establishment and management of fruit trees like Apple, orange, mango, guava, grapevine, strawberry, soursop, coconut, palm tree, date palm etc is an emerging sector of agriculture in Nigeria. It holds a big potential for massive returns on investment.

Building a Profitable Orchard requires planning, strategizing and good decision making.

Some of the steps to establishing a successful orchard are

1. Site selectiom: The site must have a good soil properties, level surface, non flooding, secured from animals, theives and unauthorized person's.

2. Selection of fruits: The fruits trees to be grown must be adapted to the environment, must be hybrids for early fruiting, dwarf, resistant to pest and disease, good fruit quality and high yielding.

3. Availability of water : the site must be located where you can get access to water for the plants especially during the dry season. Sources of water like borehole, streams, wells, reservoir, lakes etc can be used to water the plants during the dry season and will help the plants grow and continually be productive.

4. Carrying out Good Agronomic Practices (GAP)
These are practices that are important for your fruit trees to grow healthy and produce Abundant yields. They include Proper fertilizer application, Weed control, Pest and disease management, Pruning, Vine training, etc.

Hello everyone!

It has being awhile now. The season has already started and is far spent.

Here are some important points to note in your fruit tree management during this ongoing rainy season.

1. Ensure constant monitoring for pest and disease on your plants. This is because plants are more susceptible to pest and disease attack during the rainy season than the dry season.

Preventive and curative chemicals can be used to reduce risk of attacks and tree loss. e.g Redforce, mancozeb, lambda cyhalothrine etc

2. Good weed management around the plants and within the garden/ farm. This is necessary because many harmful pest and some plant disease use this weeds as a host before it is transmitted to the tree. Also this weeds compete with the tree for nutrients and causes tree stunt and low productivity.

3. Fertilizer and manure application: this is essential if you want your tree to do well and produce great fruits. Trees need these nutrients for their growth and development. You can supply inorganic fertilizers like NPK or organic fertilizer like poultry manure, cattle manure or farmyard manure.

This helps to supply the necessary nutrients that will keep your plants healthy and productive for many years to come.

5 Misconceptions about apple production in Nigeria Part 1

It's being a while here, many things happened since the last time. But it's good to be back!!

I have received so many messages and enquires about production of apple in Nigeria. Some of this questions are from research made about the plant while some others are really just misconceptions.

I will be writing about some misconceptions about apple production. Follow me..

1. The first and by far the most popular misconception is that Apple can't grow in a tropical environment like Nigeria. It could have being true if this was 1950 but not any more. With improvement in plant science and agriculture, varieties that can flower and fruit even in a higher temperature area like ours has being bred, examples are wambugu, Anna, Fuji etc. This varieties can grow, flower and fruit excellently in the Nigerian climate in both the North and South of Nigeria.

They will give high yields and can produce for more than 90 years under good management.

2. Another misconception about apple production is that you don't need any management activities like fertilization, pest control, weeding and pruning etc to obtain a good yield. Some people give examples of local fruits that grows and produce without any form of care and management and still produce. But my question to them is: how long does it take to start producing fruits after planting? Some take more than 5 years, some take even 10 years!
But with good management on your Apple tree, you can start to get fruits from 2 years and upward.

So it's important you give proper management to your plants so you will obtain the best yield from your plants.

Apples are one of the most popular fruits eaten in Nigeria and all over the world— and for good reason. They are nutritious fruit loved by everyone both young and old.

They are rich sources of vitamins and minerals that are good for our health. They help in weight loss, reduce the risk of heart attack, help reduce the risk of attack in asthma patients and can improve memory etc., the list is endless.

But do you know that they can be grown in Nigeria? Yes they can!

Before now apples could only be grown in the temperate regions of the world like Europe, North Africa, USA, China etc. this is because the fruit needs a ‘cold chill’ ( around 7oC for 5 weeks) to break dormancy for flowering. This has made growing apples in the tropics like Nigeria impossible.

But not anymore, because due to breeding studies by scientists from the crop and horticultural science Mekkelle university in Ethiopia. They have breed a variety of apple that can comfortable grow in our weather conditions.

This variety are readily available here in Nigeria and can grow and give excellent yields. They start to produce fruit from 4 feet tall even before transplanting to a permanent site.

They are easy to manage like any other fruit tree and can grow in diverse soil types.

Each tree produces around 450 fruits per season.

Apple seedlings are still available for purchase and immediate delivery to all locations around the country.

The seedlings can be grown within the house, it requires a spacing of 4m x 4m.

Does this (4m × 4m spacing) mean that acre of land can take up to 4 thousand apple trees (since there are about 4046 square meters in an acre of land)?

Welcome to the planting season, planting has begun in earnest!!

Let me once again give some background information about the apple Seedling

Apples are a popular fruit consumed globally due to their nutrient-dense composition. This fruit is rich in vitamins and minerals, contributing to their benefits to human health. Apples aid in weight loss, reduce the risk of heart disease, help alleviate asthma attacks, and promote memory function, among other benefits.

Traditionally, apple cultivation is confined to temperate regions such as Europe, North Africa, USA, and China. This is due to the fruit's requirement for a cold chill of approximately 7oC for five weeks to break dormancy for flowering. However, recent breeding studies by scientists from the Crop and Horticultural Science Department at Mekelle University in Ethiopia have yielded a new apple variety suitable for tropical climates like Nigeria.

This variety is now readily available in Nigeria and is capable of producing excellent yields. The apple tree variety begins fruit production at four feet tall, even before transplantation to a permanent site. These trees are easy to manage, similar to any other fruit tree, and can thrive in diverse soil types.

Key points:

Apples are a popular fruit that is nutrient-dense and beneficial for human health.
