Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide have surpassed 10 million on Sunday, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University.

The staggering milestone comes six months after first cases were first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in mid-December, before spreading across the globe.

COVID-19 has now infected 10,137,682 persons with 502,442 causalities, 5,501,545 recoveries recorded across 188 countries.

The United States is at the top of the table having 2,606,457 confirmed cases and over 128,201 fatalities.

Brazil comes second with 1,319,274 cases and 57,149 deaths.

With 634,437 infections, Russia occupies the third place in highest number of cases, but United Kingdom comes third in highest casualties, having 43,550 deaths.

India comes next with 544,615 cases and 16,424 deaths. The United Kingdom is fifth country with highest confirmed cases with 311,151.

In Africa, South Africa tops the chart with 131,800 infections and 2,413 deaths. Egypt follows with 63,923 confirmed cases and 2,708 deaths.

Nigeria comes third with 24,077 infections and 558 deaths.

The figure comes as numerous countries including Nigeria ease lockdown restrictions, despite the continuous spread of the virus across nations.
Countries like Germany, China which effectively handled the first wave of the pandemic are beginning to experience a second wave, a problem that medical experts say will recur until a vaccine is found.

Other countries are seeing more than 10,000 infections a day.

In India, authorities are working towards opening a COVID-19 treatment facility to deal with the upsurge in cases in the nation’s capital, New Delhi.

As at the time of filing this report, there was no approved vaccine for the disease, but there are ongoing drug trials which offer hope for protection against the disease.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of remdesivir, an anti-retroviral drug, for hospitalised COVID-19 patients. Nigeria also approved the drug for strictly clinical use.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) also recently approved the use of dexamethasone for critically-ill COVID-19 patients.

As at Saturday midnight, 24,077 coronavirus cases were confirmed in Nigeria with 8,625 recoveries and 558 casualties. recorded.

Also, according to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control’s June 27th situation report, 130,164 samples have been tested nationwide.
