The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a dog breed bred in the Southern Africa region. Its forebears can be traced to the ridged hunting dogs of the Khoikhoi, which were crossed with European dogs by the early colonists of the Cape Colony of southern Africa. The original breed standard was drafted by F. R. Barnes, in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), in 1922, who named the breed the Rhodesian Ridgeback. The standard was approved by the South African Kennel Union in 1927.

So typical we can say the dog originated from Zimbabwe but, it now for of a South African breed, so it was taken to South Africa and crossed with the boerboel

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is an all-purpose “Renaissance hound” whose hallmark is the ridge, or stripe of backward-growing hair, on his back. Though the breed was made famous in its native Africa for its skill at tracking and baying – but never, ever killing – lions, today Ridgebacks are cherished family dogs whose owners must be prepared to deal with their independence and strong prey drive.

Lol it was strongly believed to be the lions dog, because of a myth believing they could kill a Lion, but it not true, but nevertheless it is a. Strong hunting dog which is territorial and swift to attack

Good article but minor correction.. it wasn't crossed with the boerboel rather it's part of the combination of breeds which was crossed to form what we now call a boerboel
