CAF Champions League Preliminary First Leg Round-Up

The first leg of the preliminary round of the 15th Orange CAF Champions League 2011 took place over the weekend with some amazing score lines…

Raja Club Athlétic (Morocco) 10-1 Tourbillon FC (Chad)

Raja CA pounded Chad’s champions Tourbillion FC 10-1, with little breathing space for the visitors, who will definitely pack up for the return match, as it appears almost impossible to overturn the situation to edge to the next.

Asec Mimosas (Côte d’Ivoire) 7-0 ASC SNIM –Cansando (Mauritania)

Many people knew Asec Mimosas would defeat the Mauritanian side in Abidjan but not as much to seven goals, to make the meeting seem as a goal festival. Despite the absence of key players from the Cote D’Ivoire champions’ outfit, who are camping ahead of the CHAN 2011, the Yellow and Blacks were able to put together a dreadful squad, but can they really be judged by a weak Mauritania club?

SuperSport United (South Africa) 2-0 Matlama FC (Lesotho)

It was expected to be ‘a walk in the park’ for the reigning PSL champions on Sunday in the first meeting between the two clubs, but the Tshwane side had to settle for a narrow victory over their visitors from Lesotho, which makes things all the more difficult when they head to the Mountain Kingdom for the return leg, which has been penciled for the weekend of 11-13 February.

AS Forces Armées Nigériennes (Niger) 0-0 J. C. A. Treichville (Cote D’Ivoire)

A disappointing goalless draw leaves much to be decided in the second leg of this encounter, where the home side is expected to prevail, although goals will be needed in that match for the victors to progress.

Motor Action F. C. (Zimbabwe) 0-1 Cnaps Sports (Madagascar)

In one of the surprises of the round, the Madagascans stunned the Zim champions with a narrow 1-0 win in Motor Action's backyard. The Zimbabweans will be determined to overturn the deficit when they visit the Islanders in the return leg of the competition's first round.

Ulinzi Stars Football (Kenya) 0-4 Zamalek (Egypt)

Kenya Premier League champions Ulinzi Stars will be devastated with their poor showing at the hands of the perilous Egyptians who humiliated them with a 4-0 beating in Kenya. There is little hope for the Kenyans to progress to the second round considering the fact that they will be visiting the Egyptians in the second leg with four strikes against them.

Good away results from Enyimba and Kano Pillars. The next round of matches will be tougher and with better teams.

I hope they both make it into the money spinning group stage

Meanwhile, I don't like the fact that Kano Pillars has appointed Ladan Bosso as coach. I actually feel his is a minus for them. Kadiri Ikhana would have been a better choice IMO undecided

Pillars’ Mohammed shoots down Barolle
by Humphrey Njoku 12 February 2011, 20:32

Nigeria’s Orange Caf champions league campaigner, Kano Pillars on Saturday at the Sanni Abacha stadium, Kano defeated visiting Mighty Barolle of Liberia 1-0 in the second leg of the first round of the lucrative clubs football event.

- Vote for Nigeria's 50 greatest players

Pillars lone goal came off the boot of their lanky hitman Gambo Mohammed in the 29th minutes, the Kano based side advanced to the second round on 3-1 aggregate having won the first leg 2-1 in Monrovia.

Spokesman of Pillars Idris Malikawa told SuperSport.com that the Liberian champion is a good side only that they met their superior in the hands of Nigeria’s former champion.

“Mighty Barolle is a good side, they gave good account of themselves with a resolve to upturn the table against us but I think they met equally a resolute team.

“Of course, there is no how you can compare a Liberian club side with her Nigerian counterpart, the difference is always there and it showed in this match, Pillars are clearly better.

“We are through to the second round, it is not yet uhuru, we are waiting for our next round opponent but whoever it turns out to be Pillars are ready and prepared this time around to contest the league’s title,” he said.

The coach Isah Ladan Bosso tutored side were stopped in the semi finals of the 2009 edition by fellow Nigerian premier league team mates, Heartland who went ahead to lose in the final to TP Mazembe of Congo DR but not before they stopped Africa’s clubs power house, Al Ahly of Egypt from the race.

Yes oo but i am not happy with their form in the league and also kano pillars . . maybe it is continental competition or as i got from somewhere that they are having management issues with cash.

The new draw will be out soon and the teams that drew bye will now join them at the next stage . . so the big boys are coming now and they have to step it up.

Re: CAF Champions League & Confed. Cup 2011 - News, Fixtures And Results by medjai(m): 1:13pm On Apr 02, 2011
^^yes, your beloved Pillars cheesy lost 2-0 away to a very good side. It will take an extraordinary performance from Pillars to turn this around.
Besides, if Pillars go through, they'll likely face TP Mazembe. TP Mazembe won its 1st leg against Simba of Tanzania 3-1 at home. So even if Pillars qualify, they are out grin grin

It's not impossible for them to score 3 goals against Wydad Cassablanca.

Worst Kano Pillars will do is score 2 goals and force the game to go into extra time and possibly penalty shoot-out

scoring 3 goals is not the issue here but conceding at least one is. the goal margin is not too wide, but N/African opponents can be pretty tough.
