Anti business Nigerian govt.

Dstv subs in Nigeria are the lowest in Africa.

So the only reason, they put the law was because of startimes a govt company.

They want to collect things for free without paying.

Socialist government, that is why this country will be forever poor.
are you from South Africa ?why are you supporting evil?

Regardless, monopoly is a NO!
CTV is in the south South with a subscription of #3000 flat for complete channels. Premiership, Spanish league etc. That equals to #20,000 plus sub on DStv yet DStv is busy employing thugs to destroy their facilities at midnight.

Let government deregulate Cable network in the country.

DSTV is not a monopoly.
I like your last advice though, complete deregulation.
But I hope you are willing to pay a higher subs without crying exploitation once again.

TSTV killed themselves. Government was ready to back them, even to the point of offering tax break for 5 years,

1.TSTV went and pirated BeIN signals.....nearly getting BeIN into serious legal and financial trobule.

2.TSTV came with promises they could not keep (like offering data with their decoder, like that' was going to happen. Not even DSTV offers data with decoder)

3.TSTV had weak offerings, apart from football. Nigerians don't get cable only for football.

Federal government gave them nothing...
1. They might have legal case with BeIN but wouldn't stop them from continuing their business.... I have done a similar business in electricity generation and am telling you from experience that Nigeria as a government hates innovation.... It scares them into thinking they won't be in control of the masses

2 and 3 wasn't even the case because people was actually hoping on that promises.... So they haven't even started for you to prove they could not deliver to their promises

No need to lie.
MTN never had a monopoly.
They are not even the first in Nigeria.

Again shocking how uneducated people can be.

This is not the first time we are hearing this and honestly we don't care. I'm sure nothing will be done by the time the DSTV drop some millions. To put an end to this monopoly, I believe we the subscribers have a lot to do. We could stop subscribing for a month to protest our displeasure to this endless increase in tariff. DSTV is so useless that even during the lockdown when service provider like MTN are giving 10 free SMS per day, DSTV can't even leave the basic Nigerian station like Channel and TVC when subscription expires. I believe we the subscribers are the only one who can break their monopoly and bend them to stop taken us for a ride. If we wait for the government that song will change when they are bribed, then we are in for long thing

Dream on!
You buy the phone you like, the car model you like, choose your own bank but you want others
to sacrifice their choice for you because you want to watch cable TV.

So DStv should continue with the monopoly and effect changes as they wish?
Pay per view is what applies in most societies including in South Africa so why should it be different here?
That was how MTN said per second billing was not possible in Nigeria until Glo came out with same pay per second.
Saying DStv sub in Nigeria is the cheapest in Africa is a big lie, i challenge you to provide proof to this.

Yes o...I am seeing the lie that MTN was having a monopoly, as if Econet(later Celtel, then Zain, and Airtel now), Mtel and (after 2005) Glo did not exist.
Nitel also was still around for sometime. Then there were CDMA operators like Starcoms, Reltel, and Intercellular (sadly now all defunct).

Is it your internet service providers? Is it even your government as a whole?? Take it or leave it, service delivery in Nigeria is very terrible. Back to the matter, your Abuja politicians are evidently ignorant of how TV rights work globally. The contents being showed on cable TV are bought from TV companies Worldwide for millions of dollars. For e.g, Multichoice pays sky sport about 250 million USD to broadcast EPL and this is in addition to the 100million Euros to broadcast UEFA champs league. In light of the embarrassing depreciation of the naira against international currencies, it is only fair that Multichoice increases their tariff to make reasonable profits. Multichoice is not a charity organization, it is a business entity. Let the Abuja politicians focus their energy on stabilizing the economy, stabilizing by the capital market, improving the earning power of ordinary Nigerians and providing good business environment for investors, rather than chasing shadows. If at all anything, Multichoice should be commended for providing a wide range of flexible plans to match customers financial strength. As for the many Nigerians supporting the Abuja politicians to fight multichoice, I shake my head for you. Instead of you to channel your energy into holding your leaders accountable and demanding for a better Nigeria, you are instead making noise over multichoice that never forced itself on anyone. If anyone thinks he/she is being ripped off, then he/she should quit subscribing. After all, cable TV is far from being a necessity of life.

You are right Sir.

But, I think if care is not taken a different cable TV company will soon take over the Nigeria Tv rights.
Nigeria is strong enough to invite the most strongest cable TV from, UAE (E-Vision), UK (Virgin Media) Germany (Bosch Telekom), Spain (Movistar+), USA (Optimum Cable Tv) etc
If the govt listen to the pleas of Nigerians, then it could be a bye bye to the multi choice.

Was that really what happened or hitv was out bidded for the exclusive premier league right. Even dstv that as been long in existence bearly survived that year 200? hitv took the right exclusively. A prompt govt intervention could have safe the day, even if its mean sharing d right 60-40.
What killed hitv was not misappropriation of funds like you insinuated buh rather lack of funds to match an established firm. infants firms are suppose to enjoy protect, support & intervention from govt.

LOL..

If government started paying for HiTV's Premier League bidding, when was it going to stop paying?

Billions of dollars to HiTV so that less than 20% of the population can watch some English football on Saturday? In a country with a large population of poor people.

Could GT bank have kept waiting for centruies for its loans to be paid? Shey you know why we had failed banks in the 1990's...because people did not pay back their loans to said banks. And they collapsed. And GT bank was one of the banks that survived that era where many of its contemporaries failed....

HiTV failed because they had poor content apart from football. Comapred to DSTV, their offerings were weak. As a result, not enough subscribers, and thus they fell down drastically.

If you are doing business, by the time government comes to be bailing you out, wahala dey...both for you and government.

Obama that bailed out car companies in the US, up till today people are still blasting him for it.

are you from South Africa ?why are you supporting evil?

Its about being objective and reasoning with a sound mind and applying basic economic and commercial principles. Not sentiment.

People just can't reason here!

Amazing how after we bash NASS for their corruption, you actually now think NASS has the masses at heart. Of all the issues we have DSTV is now the most important abi.

So if DSTV paid $100m for license 3years ago when $1 was 360 and we are charged on that basis, can the price remain the same if $ is now 460??

Only an idiot won't appreciate that licenses are paid to Premier League in USD, not Naira. Its just basic sense guys!

I keep saying that the problem with dstv, petrol, electricity, etc is because of our poor salaries ,not the pricing of these things.

Because Nigerians are docile and won't stand up to the government to address the real issues, they fight tooth and nail for prices of everything to remain stupidly and unreasonably low.

Face your government!!!

Foreign companies should never be allowed any form of monopoly in Nigeria.

South Africa would equally not allow such!

I hope this is not a decoy just to get multi choice to give them enough handouts, because I don't believe these guys that have share in multi choice will advertently remove that monopoly unless they are spell bound. I suspect so, since govt is looking for revenue left, right and center to fill up their babariga.

You guys need proper business education, DSTV is not a monopoly.
You or your government are free to set up a new cable TV as a competitor
but I guess you won't.

You want someone else to risk their capital to invest and at the same time
force them to lower prices for you. You can't eat your cake and have it.

Friendly advice, if you don't like the price, stop using DSTV, it is not food or air.

OK..here is what they were doing with BeIN...they were taking Bein signals and rebroadcasting them in Nigeria re Premier league and Champions league. Without paying for them...and because Bein was not authorised to broadcast premiership in Nigeria, or Africa , they were in trobule with the Premier league rights issuers.
What kind of scamish behavior was that.(even unethical self)

Once upon a time , the cable sattelite company ABG was broadcasting premier league in Northern Nigeria until 2003, when DSTV took over. They had to stop.It angered a lot of people up Nwth, but that's just business.

2 and 3 wasn't even the case because people was actually hoping on that promises.... So they haven't even started for you to prove they could not deliver to their promises

OK...so how long should we have waited for them?

If I was owning a shop and I was saying I am selling Corn flakes...and you come and I tell you 'Sorry, we don't have cornflakes, we will have it soon, and I cannot tell you how soon, but you can take this pack of Ogi/Pap instead...what would you think about my business.? Will you wait for me, or would you go to my competitior who is selling corn flakes ??
