The journey of a thousand miles started with one step, dstv start from somewhere, no one starts perfects or end up perfect .. there will alway be room for improvement. considering the years dstv as been in an existence to Hitv .. i think it highly unfair for anyone to draw up comparism. hitv life span lasted just 4yrs (2007-11), dstv came on air 1995 as at 2000 what was there subscriber base tew, i remember then small breeze signal go lost grin startimes & hitv beat them to that.
No be say govt go dash dem money naa investment, economy nids such long term investment, why do you think foreign countries rush to loans us, love ur neibor as ursef abi grin grin loan naa beta business ask banks & other financial institution, oversee govt prefer installmental paymental payment to cash.
Premier league is expensive, dstv got d right for just $100m ... do you know how much presidential election cost in nigeria people fund it, .. hushpuppi & his crew were caught with $40million cash ...money is not the problem we are not don't just like & support our own nii

OK...let's look at it this way

You want governemnt to pay $100million so that less than 4million out of 200million people watch football.

Okay......great return on investment (lol).

If HiTV had improved its non football content (like Startimes) maybe they would have still been here today.

In business, when you compete, you have to offer better products than your competitiors.

In South Korea, the government protected their domestic industries well. But in return those industries had to produce quality products. HiTV and TSTV were not producing qulaity, and HiTV after 3 years was still not doing well enough.

If you use pay as you watch, you will end up paying higher than the current system.

In brief, DSTV negotiates payment for contents by channels. As a result, they pay a set price.

On a pay as you watch system, you would be paying per content you watch. So, for example, you would be paying for one episode of your favourite series, or one football match...

Which could, in principle, mean you pay as much as N20000 or more per month...because content is not cheap.

That's why we have a packages system. Not only in Nigeria, all over Africa. It's cheaper.

I have been reading comments here and many of the posts are so annoying. You, just like several others who commented here, has a vested interest in DSTV. It is very apparent because you have strongly supported DSTV and giving all manner of support for them.

It is evident that Nigeria is probably the most football (precisely premiership) passionate country in Africa. DSTV even acknowledged that Nigeria is responsible for a good percentage of premiership subscribers in Africa but pays almost the same amount as the rest of Africa combined!

DSTV is a Shylock company that has reaped off Nigerians over the years, and they used marchiavelian ways to send competitors out of business.

SA does not have a football (premiership) "crazy" population like Nigeria. Even though they have higher GDP per capita, that advantage is definitely outstripped by Nigeria having a population that is about 4 times higher and a more passionate football following.

DSTV is so mean as a company that the margin of profit it allows dealers/agents selling their products is so little. Again, ask yourself, why would they increase their price astronomically at a time like this?

A company came all the way from SA to fleece us with reckless abandon yet we have Nigerians supporting them!?

Many of the comments here supporting DSTV with passion are from their employees, these ones are ready to sell their country just for the peanuts they are earning as salary. SMH!

Bros, you don't know how pay as you go works in practice. If you knew,. you won't be advocating for it here in Nigeria, because you would end up paying far more than you do now for your DSTV subscription.

I hope you understand now...

Source : PM NEWS, 2015 article.

why use foreign paytv as reference, exchange rate even makes it inappropriate. i bought startimes around '10, around 2015 or so they introduced pay as you,and the price was so favourable to the subscribers. as low as #30 per day grin .. instead of having unnecessary channels adding to your bill you select your favourites channel n even pay less.

Startimes has a cheaper rate because they carry cheaper channels. And they don't carry Premier league because they can't afford it

Explain EXACTLY how we have been ripped off?

Population 4times as much doesn't amount to subscribers as you have seen the subscription stats on this thread already.

Explain exactly HOW we have been fleeced. Companies operate all over the world. Dstv have no reason why they cannot operate in Nigeria.

All sentiments in this post with no objective and transparent analysis.

We are.

1.Tax per gdp ratio is 5.8 % (South Africa is 28%, Ghana 14%)

2.Our budget for this year was $26billion . For comparison SA spent $23 billion on education alone (Canada spent $65 billion on primary school education alone in one year).

3.GDP per capita for Nigeria ? $2028 . South Africa? $6734

We are not rich.

All of these are systemic failures. Nigeria has a larger GDP than South Africa. If Nigeria had great leadership, it's per capita indices will be better corruption has ruined the proper distribution of wealth and industrial development.

That’s what good competition does for consumer protection!

mysteryman2014:

Yeye DSTV, these south African coys always ripping Nigerians off.

That is how MTN initially claimed that per second billing was impossible until Glo came and introduced PSB as USP, there forcing MTN to reconfigure there system to support PSB.

Now DSTV is saying PAYG is not possible for Nigeria market because of lack of competition.

There business strategy must change otherwise with time their market share will reduce seriously.

South Africa has a lower GDP than Nigeria true but we have a population five times theirs.Tjus they have a higher per capita

Also, Nigeria loves price controls, and lower prices which drives away investment in our power and petroleum sector and by extension weakens our industries.

So the only reason, they put the law was because of startimes a govt company.

They want to collect things for free without paying.

You are out of your mind, what do you mean that DStv sub in Nigeria is the lowest in most countries, are we enjoying the same standard of living with other countries? What the government is doing is right... So stfu if you are ignorant.

There are alternatives like Startimes.

You can swtich to them. They are much cheaper, and they offer football self.(Europa plus Bundesliga).

Or if you have the money, set up your own alternative.

The truth is, Multichoice is the only one in town (not really) because apart from Startimes, no one else has the cash to compete with them. HiTV and TSTV lost out because their offerings apart from football were very weak.
You are at a loss with the reality...

Yes, a huge population that is equally passionate about premiership amounts much.

Yes, we have been fleeced by a company that wants to monopolize premiership in Nigeria like it's their birthright. Why are they against competition?

Why would a company increase its prices at a pandemic period like this?

Why are they so mien to their agents/dealers that profit on their products are so little?

Since they are claiming that football is so expensive that they can hardly break-even, then why not stop buying the rights and show other programs?

This DSTV scheme is the same wit how PHCN don't like the prepaid metre

While electricity is an essential utility, cable TV isn't one. If you cannot afford cable TV via DSTV, port to another company. It's not by force.

Dakad:
This is not the first time we are hearing this and honestly we don't care. I'm sure nothing will be done by the time the DSTV drop some millions. To put an end to this monopoly, I believe we the subscribers have a lot to do. We could stop subscribing for a month to protest our displeasure to this endless increase in tariff. DSTV is so useless that even during the lockdown when service provider like MTN are giving 10 free SMS per day, DSTV can't even leave the basic Nigerian station like Channel and TVC when subscription expires. I believe we the subscribers are the only one who can break their monopoly and bend them to stop taken us for a ride. If we wait for the government that song will change when they are bribed, then we are in for long thing

This is a lie! For a country of more than 150M people having the highest number of poor people in the world, Nigeria is miserably poor. The country's economic growth rate hasn't surpassed 3% in FIVE YEARS yet population growth rate has increased by more than 3% annually. Compared to other countries of similar population (Brazil and Indonesia), Nigeria and the vast vast majority of her citizens are irredeemably and notoriously poor!

In my opinion I don't think our govt need worry themselves on matters such as this. Dangote is there enjoying monopoly what are they doing about it, yes its an indigenous company but we can't rule out the fast that he is enjoying the biggest monopoly in Nigeria.

And if I may ask, what type of market structure do we run in Nigeria? Is it capitalism, socialism or mixed.

So in the case of dstv all govt need do is encourage Nigerians to invest in that industry and give dstv good competition, which in the long run will reduce cost.

Startimes and others are not in the competition at all, the only company that tried was Hitv and they lost it along the line some years ago. And that leads to the question why are Nigerian owned companies are not sustainable? Is it that we as Nigerians lack entrepreneurial skills or we lack Managerial skills? One of the above must be true.

Govt of Nigeria should pls concern themselves with more pressing matters and move our great nation forward.
I stand to be corrected.

I 100% agree with you, but most Nigerians lack the education to comprehend what you have written - no shades, just an honest observation.

Cheapest dstv service here in SA cost about 160rand, 160x22rand equals 3,648.67..
Now tell me how much is the cheapest dstv bouquet??
Also u need to consider the value of our currency.. There's no way we can be paying the same as South Africa and other countries whose currency by far outmatches ours

You don't understand how pay as you go works.

Under pay as you go, you would be paying at least N1000 or more per premier league match you watch.

Meaning in one month, you could be paying N8000 for 4 matches.

Better read this article What they won't tell you about pay per view, then you will understand.
